Knead to Know: Migson Pollock 🎸

we’re back with our next Knead to Know interview, with the amazing Migson Pollock! 🤘

we’ve known Migs for a while now, having performed across Manchester at open mics and gigs for a few years now and his unique style and focused performances really stand him out as an artist – plus his use of the bow, pedals and loops all bring something new to the able that people don’t often see! ☀️ on top of this, he’s a prolific songwriter with plenty of tunes under his belt and even knows a whole bunch of covers, a great talent!

he’s just put out his debut EP under the Migson Pollock moniker, “New Migs on the Block” which sounds absolutely fantastic! it’s boss to hear these tunes in a studio setting and really shows off his creativity and talent – you can find it on Spotify here. check out our interview below! 🏵

So, you’ve recently put out your new EP “New Migs on the Block” – where did you record it, was it at a studio or at home?

I recorded it at Futureworks Studios in Manchester, with Paul from Tilted Audio.

You’ve moved from Wales to Manchester in the past few years, what are the main differences in the scenes throughout? What made you want to move?

The main reason I moved was to try and give myself a better opportunity to be able to do more with music. Whether it’s from doing gigs myself, or going to see other bands play and meet more musicians. It’s hard to compare the scene between north Wales and Manchester, as Manchester is obviously a much busier place, especially considering its universities and the amount of musicians here, who have countless bars and venues around them to play at. And in North Wales, the facilities and number of bands and musicians just isn’t as widely available anymore. And whilst I love exploring and travelling around new places in Manchester with my guitars, it’s always a great feeling when I get invited back home to do a gig.

We know you have been doing music for a long time now, Migs – give us a little summary of your creative endeavours over the years!

2009 – I first got involved in the music scene, with a punk band I formed called Ugly Fashion, playing guitar and being the songwriter
2010 – I took over on vocals after our original singer had left. (We started as a 4-piece band but remained a 3-piece from there on.)
2011 – the band broke up due to other commitments among the band members.
2012 – I started busking in Llandudno, playing acoustic covers by mainly 60’s and 70’s artists – Bob Dylan, Bowie, Rolling Stones etc.
2014 – Joined a duet with my friend Kiani called ‘The Guitarist & The Girl’. She would sing whilst I played guitar. We did gigs and went busking together over the next couple to a few years.

2014 – Ugly Fashion got back together with a new drummer.
2015 – Went to a recording studio for the first time with the band.

2016 – Ugly Fashion broke up again.

2018 – I started my solo project.

2019 – I moved myself and my music to Manchester.

2020 – I recorded most of the material for my first EP.

2022 – Mid-January, that EP was released.

What are your main inspirations for music and creativity?

Tash Sultana, Sigur Rós, and Spiritualized.
Tash inspired me to start creating music with a loop pedal, Sigur Rós inspired me to create music with a violin bow (not Jimmy Page, as some people think!), and Spiritualized inspired me to create some nice, slow rock songs, whilst still having that cool fort of feel to them.
But also recently I’ve dabbled into a bit of shoegazing, bands like Slowdive. And even more recently, I’ve gone back to my punk/post-punk roots and I’ve re-worked a couple of my old band’s songs mixed with newer influences – the band Crack Cloud for example.

Over the lockdowns and past few years, how’ve you been spending your time musically? (recording, writing etc)

Lonely!

How have you been readjusting to gigging and post-pandemic music over the past few months?

It doesn’t really feel much different to me now. It just feels like a lot of time was wasted without them. But now I’m writing more often, knowing it won’t be too long until I’ll get to perform them live. So it feels like everything I do now is becoming more worthwhile, and they’re not just ideas staying stuck in the back of my head – I’m actually completing them.

We’ve seen a lot of you over the past few months over at open mics and gigs across Manchester – what do you enjoy most about performing live?

Probably getting the violin bow out during the song ‘Lost it’. And although I don’t claim to have the originality in that, seeing the reaction of people who’ve not seen that being done before is always pretty good.
An elder gentleman said to me a couple of weeks ago that every time I play that song with the bow, it was making him fall asleep… I think that’s beautiful.

Obviously, you use quite a unique set-up for your live sets – what made you want to delve into the world of pedals and the such?

Seeing a video of Tash Sultana performing ‘Jungle’ on youtube in 2017. I had seen people using a loop pedal to do guitar solos and stuff before but I wasn’t really impressed. But when I saw Tash performing what sounded like full and complete songs created only on a loop pedal, I was just blown away.
All I was doing musically at that point was busking and doing a bunch of acoustic gigs, playing other peoples songs, as I had no desire to be an acoustic solo artist, so I never really bothered to write any of my own that way. I thought maybe being a loop-artist was the way forward for me too, as I much preferred playing my electric guitars than acoustic.
I told my friend Rico (Ugly Fashion bass player) my idea and he told me he has a loop pedal he would sell to me, which happened to be the same one Tash Sultana started off with. And I guess the rest is history.

Have you got anything else planned for 2022?

Yes!

it’s so lovely to be able to hear different musicians’ perspectives on creativity, how they’ve got to where they are and their influences, and to see the similarities between certain artists and even the differences! ☀️ it’s been great to chat with Migs here, and we hope you enjoyed this insight into him as an artist. we’re huge fans of his music and the EP sounds boss, really worth checking out – we’ll pop some links below for you to have a look at. 😊 a big thanks to Migson Pollock for chatting to us here, and we’ll be back with another interview real soon! 🍩

Just The Crust 17/01/22: HWY – Come Up 🙌

our feature for today’s Just The Crust is the debut single from Manchester-based alternative rockers HWY “Come Up”! 🤘

exploding onto the scene with this debut release, they’ve really started out on a high! blending elements of punk, grunge, and alternative rock, they’ve really created a gorgeous and unique sound for themselves. it’s a must-listen for any heavier fans out there, but we reckon it’ll suit fans of any genre! ☀️

with gorgeous guitar picking throughout the track, hard-hitting and driving drumbeats, and then a lovely lead vocal that moulds the track together so well and really paints a picture with the lyricism, it’s a fantastic tune. 😎 when the chorus comes in, it really ignites the power of the track, opening up to a huge sound. the breakdown of the track is super lush too, mellowing out the track into a final eruption of their metal and alternative rock influence, dropping seamlessly into double time and really throwing the tune into overdrive. absolutely fantastic stuff from these chaps! 🪐

you can find the track over on their Spotify at https://open.spotify.com/artist/2vwjiY3CQUtVvwLaXewiB0 alongside other streaming platforms, or the full music video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQU_S6efB4c – well worth a watch, really well done. definitely one that they should be proud of and we can’t wait to hear more from them! 🏵

returning after the success of their debut single, they’ve done a fantastic debut gig, had radio and playlists play their tunes, and now they’ve got another great tune under their belt. 😊

with a gorgeous and soulful piano line, fantastic vocals comparable to the likes of The National and Bon Iver, the track sounds absolutely dreamy. sounding absolutely perfect for a rainy and calm day, or when you’re in the mood to unwind and relax 🥰 the vocal harmonies throughout really bring the track to life, and the calming yet intricate instrumentation really shows the high calibre of musicianship throughout the band.

they’ve really set the bar with this release, only their second single yet it has all the qualities of a band who have been together for a long time – sounding so fantastic! 🏵 head on over to their Spotify at https://open.spotify.com/artist/36VXZhpyAWDKjVHnywV2UK to find the track in full, or go to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hv8SedOObk to check out the music video!

The Wrap: December 2021 ❄️

here’s our December edition of The Wrap 🤘 so much amazing music coming out lately and we’ve put together a lil list of some fantastic ones released last month! this is easily one of our favourite features, we’ve covered so many incredible tunes and it’s a pleasure be to able to bring them to you. 😊 check out our reviews below!

Liverpool-based Gen and the Degenerates are back with yet another class single – following their previous releases, they’ve put out a new tune “Wild Thing“! 🤘 a huge anthemic song celebrating difference and diversity, with lovely riffs, massive drumbeats and fantastic vocals from Gen. We love the breakdown, really building up to that final chorus that just explodes into the catchy lyricism we’ve seen throughout each of their singles. Yet another incredible release, we can’t wait to see what 2022 holds in store for these guys! (SPOTIFY / YOUTUBE)

Sheffield-based songwriter Daz Cadwallander has been on our radar for a while now and we were amazed by his last release “On My Mind” – and he’s returned with an introspective and lovely single “When I’m“. ☀️ with heartfelt and personal lyricism, great vocals throughout and a lush atmosphere to the track, it’s a great listen and really shows off his songwriting ability. For fans of The Verve, Seahorses and old school 1990’s indie vibes – looking forward to see what he’s got for us next! (SPOTIFY / YOUTUBE)

One of our favourite songwriters on the Manchester scene, David Gorman has released a brand new tune “La Mort“! We’ve caught him performing a good few times in the past few years and he never fails to impress. We loved his 2019 release “Curses” (actually one of the first tracks on our Local Loaf playlist!) and this song only continues to show off his fantastic vocal ability, lovely songwriting style with such great storytelling, and the production on this is so lovely, with so many different instruments coming together to create such a great soundscape. 🏵 The harmonies throughout this are gorgeous, and really compliment David’s main vocal that really commanders the track and draws the attention to the imagery conjured throughout the song. Hoping to see more from him soon! (SPOTIFY / BANDCAMP)

Post-punk indie rockers Gdansk81 have returned with a brand new EP, “Star Of The Sea“! We had them perform for us back in 2019 over at The Old Abbey Taphouse and they played a fantastic set, performing songs from their first album which had some brilliant tunes on it – with driving riffs, a great connection between the band members and fantastic songwriting. 🤘 They’ve continued this through their new EP, with walls of sound and down-to-earth lyricism, we’re blown away with how great it sounds. Well worth the listen! (SPOTIFY / YOUTUBE / BANDCAMP)

Liverpool-based creative AnnieMUSIC has returned with a brand new single, “Tomorrow / Pedal“! Blending electronic atmospheres with distorted guitars, lovely vocals and subtle yet lovely lead riffs, it sounds super gorgeous. Reminiscent of artists such as Angel Olsen and Sharen Van Etten, there’s a real shine to these tracks and they sound absolutely fantastic. ☀️ even better in that it’s a double single, getting even more music from the release and the b-side “Pedal” has a gorgeous groove to it, with an almost industrial soundscape – we’d love to vibe to this tune in a music venue! Huge. Can’t wait to hear more! (SPOTIFY)

We’ve featured the fantastic Liverpool-based alternative rock outfit RIVIA in the past, with brilliant singles already under their belt – and this new tune “Wasted” sounds brilliant. With a luscious groove to the track, and fantastic vocals, suddenly opening up to a huge and explosive chorus, it’s really set them apart as ones to watch for 2022. 🙌 the breakdown is beautiful too, calming down to a mellow yet powerful atmosphere that really allows the final chorus to erupt into its full ferocity. Fantastic tune! Keep your eyes out for these guys this year. (SPOTIFY)

Another Liverpool-based artist, Torture and The Desert Spiders have been tearing it up across Merseyside over the past year or so – and they’ve just released a lovely acoustic album composed of 27 tracks! 😊 with such personal and retrospective lyricism, the songwriting on this album is absolutely fantastic – a really lovely unique style that really entices the listener in. It’s an album that you can really get lost in, with lovely vocals, minimalistic and mellow atmospheres throughout the full tracklist; sounding absolutely gorgeous and a really great collection of expertly-written tracks. Well worth checking out! (BANDCAMP)

Our final release here is actually a Christmas song from one of our favourite artists, YNES with “It’s Christmas (I Miss Ya)”! Continuing with that unique britpop/punk style we’ve seen throughout their releases, it’s got a lovely and mellow atmosphere to it with the lo-fi feel to it. The lyricism here is super personal, feeling almost effortless in the delivery and really shows off how unique and talented YNES’ creativity is. ❄️ we’re not usual fans of Christmas songs, but this might have just changed our minds! Sounding brilliant, if you’ve not heard this yet it’s definitely worth a listen. (BANDCAMP)

There’s been so many incredible releases over the past month and it’s such an honour to be able to write up about some of our favourites – brilliant to see such a rich music scene at the moment. 🤘 we can’t wait to see what 2022 has in store for us all!

Make sure you head on down to open mics, gigs, support local music and arts and keep your scenes going! 😊 all music, videos and images remain copyright of their respective owners. 🍞

Just The Crust 03/01/22: Rob Crampton – Rich Man’s Clothes ☀️

our feature for today’s Just The Crust is the brand new single from Rob Crampton Music “Rich Man’s Clothes”! 🤘

throughout the last year or so, Rob’s been putting out a great range of singles and this latest one is another fantastic one to add to his roster. 😊 recorded over at the amazing Sloe Flower Studio who are absolute magic ✨

Rob’s amazing songwriting ability is super apparent throughout this track, really blending that old country/americana feel with a modern twist in his Manchester roots. a real mellow song predominantly led by finger-picked acoustic guitar, Rob’s vocal is soothing as he tells his story throughout the track. ❄️

this reminds of the old-school storytelling of the likes of Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson and the classic folk heroes – with touching and relatable lyricism, we’re sure that Rob will be one to watch for the future. 😎 head on over to his Spotify at https://open.spotify.com/artist/1sfpo5adamTHrcmLRWmVuN to find his full discography, or head on to his YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRPdnH0m0FQ to check out the music video! fantastic stuff. 🤠

Our favourite releases of 2021 🤘

well, 2021 has been an absolutely incredible year of music for us all 🙌 there’s been so many incredible releases and we just wanted to talk about a few of our favourites! note, there’s been so so so many we can’t cover them all so here’s a lil list we made up of ones we absolutely loved ❤️

one of our very good friends here at the label and also one of the hardest-working people we know, the fantastic Tay Temple ☀️ throughout this entire year and the last she’s been releasing amazing single after single, cumulating in a full EP release this October, “Painfully Aware“! the EP really shows the connection that she’s got with her band, sounding so tight, the instrumentation all blends together so well and really brings a new dimension to Tay’s music. Her formidable songwriting ability is visible throughout each track, giving you a real insight into her thoughts, feelings and emotions over the past year or two – each song has a life and identity of it’s own and shines bright in itself, but as the full collection, it really gives a full picture when you listen. well well well worth a listen, can’t wait to hear more! 🙌 (SPOTIFY / BANDCAMP / YOUTUBE / APPLE MUSIC)

Another top artist on the Manchester scene, Rob Crampton! This release, “Trade My Troubles For Wine” really hit us with how personal and intimate the track is. The simple, yet effective guitar work, with classic country influence really shine a light on Rob’s lyrics here which are just gorgeous, and really tell a story here. His vocals sound fantastic, and the instrumentation in the background really paint a lovely backdrop for the song – folky, country, Americana yet with a lovely smither of Manchester influence in there. This track is just one of Rob’s best – his previous releases “Until The Wheels Stop Turning“, “Somewhere South of In-Between” and “Deeper Than A Thousand Miles” are yet more indicators of his talent. Definitely one to watch for the future – lovely fella, beautiful songs, great guitarwork and we’re sure lots more to come from him. Also, a massive shout to Sloe Flower Studio for the amazing production on this. One of the best studios in the North West! (SPOTIFY / YOUTUBE / APPLE MUSIC)

Just before the release of this track, we caught the fantastic alternative/americana-based Katie O’Malley performing a headline slot with her band and we were absolutely blown away by her sound. We’d caught her a good few times before as a solo act, but we were amazed by how she’d evolved her performance and how much the band brought her songs to another level. We loved her previous release to this, “Taste The Dirt” with its bluesy tone; but this single “Devil’s Got A Hold” really took us by surprise with it’s groovy bassline, soothing guitar tones, drums giving it so much energy.. and then Katie’s gorgeous, commanding vocal exploding across the track, weaving a story through lyric after lyric. One of our favourite songs of 2021, for sure! One for any fans of witchy, powerful, ethereal tracks… just completely boss. Hoping to see another EP out soon!! (SPOTIFY / BANDCAMP / YOUTUBE / APPLE MUSIC)

Oh heck, when we first heard this from Disobedient Records.. we were absolutely floored. We LOVE this single “Enemies to Lovers” from Katie Wood, what a brilliant brilliant release. Bringing 80s production, synths, drums that explode into the first verse, such fantastic vocals from Katie, then such a well-written track. Such a great chorus and pre-chorus, so many personal lyrics, really setting the scene for the story and just giving us classic gothic vibes and making us wanna jump around and party lol. The highlight of the track for us is definitely that outro – breaking down from the huge chorus to THAT SCREAM, distorted sounds pushing through the soundscape, the lyric “I just know that’s what I’ve got to say.. I’m love’s bitch, babe“.. iconic. Then drifting into the final section of the song, simply fantastic. We can not wait to hear more! ☀️ well well well worth checking out the previous releases too. (SPOTIFY / BANDCAMP / YOUTUBE / APPLE MUSIC)

The debut single from the fantastic Liverpool-based Gen and the DegeneratesUnderwear” was easily one of the highlights of the year for us 🤘 with driving riffs, the drums effortlessly pushing the track forward, Gen’s sublime and powerful vocal it’s easily one of our anthems of 2021. The lyricism throughout the entire track is so strong, really setting the scene and lifting up and giving strength to those who fit outside the box – something we really needed in the last few years! We love love love the energy of this entire track, what a debut single – really hammering home the fact that the music scene is theirs for the taking. We really love that outro, building, building and exploding into a schism of sound and chaos that only proves that punk’s not going anywhere. They followed this up with singles “Runaway Blues” and “Wild Thing” which are so fantastic in their own right, it’s well worth checking out these guys, the only way is up for them! (SPOTIFY / BANDCAMP / YOUTUBE / APPLE MUSIC)

Manchester-based alternative outfit Faux Pas brought walls of distortion, beautiful jarring riffs, fantastic vocal dynamics and unreal songwriting content this year in the form of their EP “I Feel Pretty, So Should You“! 🌹 Breathing a breath of fresh air to the Manchester scene, rejecting that classic Oasis sound and really creating something that was unique and personal to them – you can see that they’ve really poured their hearts and souls into this release. Going from walls of guitar riffs and distorted tones to calm and mellow breakdowns within in an instant, and then building up and up to keep you on the edge of your seat, we’re so amazed at the dynamic range throughout this EP and the progression throughout. Our highlight has to be that first track “This Will Kill You” – sounding absolutely huge and then the little sections of production throughout, just making it an absolute tune. Can not wait to hear even more stuff from them! (SPOTIFY / BANDCAMP / YOUTUBE / APPLE MUSIC)

We’ve had Scatterchild perform for us a good few times this year and holy, they only get better and better. “Tough Love” is one of our favourites in a long line of singles from them, with beautiful piano melodies, such strong and lovely vocals from Jay – it’s such a fantastic ballad with really relatable lyricism, and the explosion into the track after that first chorus is just brilliant. Going through to the bridge, bringing ian those backing vocals, piano lead melodies, really opens up the emotion of the track, giving you a real pure insight into the feelings poured into this tune. Their other release of 2021 “No Sense To End” is well worth checking out too, with such unreal imagery conveyed through the lyrics and music. Can’t wait to see what 2022 has in store for these guys, and we’re sure we’ll have them on plenty more gigs ❤️ (SPOTIFY / BANDCAMP / YOUTUBE / APPLE MUSIC)

West Midlands-based britpop artist YNES‘s 2021 single “Used To Be” is easily one of our favourites of the year. With such personal lyrics, almost effortless delivery of them over the track, and influences from punk, indie and more – it’s just bloody great isn’t it. 🤘 an anthem of what we used to be, giving nostalgia and wanting what we had – really hammers home the rejection of societal norms and fitting into a world that doesn’t really give one most of the time. The eruption of YNES’s vocal to an almost shout throughout the second half of the track only shows the feelings involved with this track, and the lyric “I don’t know who I am, I don’t know if I ever have” is one that we’re sure so many people here can relate to. We also love the contrasted ending, the almost calmness in comparison to the last minute or so of energy and power – it really wraps up the track and the ideas put forward so well. Incredible stuff! Well worth listening to their other releases of the year, “God’s Little Punching Bag” is yet another class tune from the singer-songwriter. We’re sure lots of great stuff is on the way in 2022 for YNES! (SPOTIFY / BANDCAMP / YOUTUBE / APPLE MUSIC)

Our final tune is here is the sublime and spectacular release from one of our favourite songwriters, Toria Wooff with “James Edward“! 🏵 another fine example of her crazy songwriting talent, this song weaves the tapestry of the track so so well. The country/americana inspired production is so well done (another big shout to Sloe Flower Studio!), with gorgeous organs, laid-back and effortless drums, really bringing the track together so well. Toria’s vocal here sounds incredible, seamless vocals hitting some lovely notes that show her fabulous range. Yet another unreal release from her, and her other releases of 2021 (“June“, “Drako“, and “Rocket Man“) really let you delve into her world and just bask in her fantastic ability to create, perform and deliver a song with ease. Huge things on the horizon for this one! (SPOTIFY / BANDCAMP / YOUTUBE / APPLE MUSIC)
