Described as angular, emotional, or sometimes just ‘sad yelling’, “SCATTERCHILD” is an alternative rock project spearheaded by Jay Plent.

As aggressively memorable as their angular logo suggests, their music is rife with detail, frenetic beats, soaring vocals and textures akin to the likes of Bowie, with the energy of The Strokes and the oddball arrangements of Everything Everything.

They emerged in Manchester during 2019 with ‘The Candidate EP’, which fused high-energy songs with political commentary through a series of scrappy, interconnected music videos that were premiered monthly in the run up to the release of the record. Telling the story of a right-wing politician’s life and career collapsing, SCATTERCHILD even went so far as to release the final video for fan favourite song ‘After Hours’ on the day of Theresa May’s resignation.

This set the blueprint for their releases; always ambitious, always making music highly visual and enticing. Songs like ‘Staring Me Down’ for example, bring together Plent’s powerful voice and dexterous guitar playing on a track that, whilst punchy and exciting, is written about feeling overwhelmed in a new city. Having grown up in the countryside of Essex, and made a home in Manchester afterwards, it’s a contrast in belonging that Plent often embraces when writing.

Theatrics form a part of their live show too. Whether it’s bespoke costuming, projections, or using a rotary-phone as an active microphone, SCATTERCHILD make sure you leave with a vivid memory of your time spent together.

The project has released critically acclaimed singles and EPs, and has just released the debut album ‘An Everyday Landscape‘ on Friday 13th of September, 2024. The record, which has been produced by SCATTERCHILD over the past 5 years, marks an important milestone in the project’s history.

It features collaborators Ben Harris, George Addison Atkinson, and Isabel Williamson, and is exactly the grand, emotional statement that SCATTERCHILD have been aiming to make since day one.

The debut album is now available to stream on all platforms, and available for purchase on Bandcamp through digital or physical means, and contains all three singles that came out in the run-up to the album release.

On the 29th of October 2025, SCATTERCHILD released their single “In The Rut” to critical acclaim, and this was followed up by a deluxe edition of the debut album “An Everyday Landscape“, featuring additional unreleased tracks and Bandcamp-exclusive songs.

The fifth of June 2026 marked the release of the latest single from SCATTERCHILD – “New Ocean“, featuring guest vocals from Quentin Wylie, and this was accompanied by a special exhibition performance titled “A New Ocean Awaits” at HOME Mcr, where a sell-out audience were treated to visuals relating to the track and a live performance from the band.
