Nearly at 10k streams on Red Stripe ☀️

our very own Olivia Browse is only 400 streams from 10k on Red Stripe 🍻

we can’t believe one single has almost got 10,000 plays on Spotify… it’s surreal to see. a testament to Liv’s commitment and determination for her music. ☀️ the effort and passion she has for her songs is so inspiring ❤️

go and give it a spin, have a listen and see what you think.. we say it’s a proper banger, but I guess we may be a lil bit biased. 😆 https://open.spotify.com/artist/4OdwzXj78GYA3i6QRT3pfE 🍞

Review: ROSH – Mending Season ☀️

Sheffield’s very own ROSH has put out another incredible single, “Mending Season”! We’ve featured their music in the past on our The Wrap feature and we were so blown away by this one, we decided to do a lil one-off review for them.

Following the release of their previous single “This Is What You Asked For“, a politically-charged delicate and intricate tune pertaining to the fight for inequality and wealth distribution, they’ve returned with another fantastic single here which only shows how much of a force they’re to be reckoned with. 🤘 maintaining their signature sound, mixing elements of jazz and rock into an acoustic folk setting which creates a truly unique sound that is not only easy to listen to, but thought-provoking and melodic through the whole journey of the songs.

“Mending Season” starts with a soft melody played on ROSH’s acoustic guitar, and as it sweeps into the verse the drums calmly crash in and ROSH’s vocal falsetto sears above the track, almost like a wave flowing into the shore. You can really feel the emotion and intricacy put into this track, each element seems like it’s been placed with such care to ensure the atmosphere of the track is just right. 🌊 throughout the track, it builds and builds – yet so calmly, with violins and strings emerging to really pinpoint and solidify the melody of the song – as it travels to the final chorus, it’s almost a contained chaos, with so much going on in the soundscape of the track, but with every instrument working perfectly in tangent with one another to create something that is truly beautiful.

The lyrics are written about the pandemic – the sense of waiting, the uncertainty of the times in which we all experienced – the anxiety and stress that came with waiting upon every single announcement that was put out by the government and the discomfort of a complete shift in the balance of everyday life. ROSH says on Bandcamp that “It’s about the collective wound we have all suffered during this pandemic, where some have suffered more than most, but where we all have lost something. I was thinking of all the people I hadn’t seen in months who were hurting, and considering what it would take for all of us to collectively heal from the experience.” With lyrics such as “Cast as mutes in another fight, the subtle rite, even numbers can’t sanctify“; you can really see the quality of songwriting shining through here, not only are the lyrics a beautiful interpretation of such a strange time, but to still maintain vocal melodies of this calibre really puts ROSH as one to keep an eye out for here. 😊

Not only this, but the b-side to the single, a song called “Fated“; is truly a gorgeous tune in its own right! Continuing almost seamlessly from the a-side, it retains both the intimacy, delicate melodies and soft ambience of the previous track. We absolutely adore the songwriting here, it’s a discussion upon the fate of civilization – so eloquently put, and as we said before, melodically superb. There’s always something for us about songs that take deep questions and philosophical ideas and give the writer’s thoughts upon them. Well worth listening to both of these tracks! 🙌

you can find the full single on all streaming platforms (Spotify / Apple Music) and on Bandcamp as pay as you feel, also there’s a full music video for it over on YouTube. It’s definitely worth keeping an eye out for this artist; with an album on the way, we’re sure they’re destined for great things. 🍞

Just The Crust 20/06/22: Nat Dempsey & the Near Strangers 🤘

we’ve known Nat for a long time now, and he’s got such a fantastic discography to his name – so many great singles that sound absolutely fantastic. 😊 a proper talent here in Manchester and one to definitely watch out for, especially for his live sets!

opening with a real groove to the track, the drums and bass in perfect sync with one another – it starts with Nat on an almost deadpan vocal, suddenly opening up to a more melodic vocal line and building and building with each instrument until the chorus which is just explosive. 💥

his lyricism has only got better and better with each track, this song takes a real inspection upon the state of the world and the influence that different figures have and how they all seem to contradict each other, yet don’t… we love seeing the stories behind songs and their meanings and there’s so much to unpack in this one, we’ll let you figure it all out for yourself though 😆

this new single sounds brilliant, they’ve stayed true to their signature sound that we’re used to – really loving the opening bassline and groove to the track, pushes it along so well and the guitar tones are super luscious. as it opens up towards the chorus the build is great, and it erupts with such intensity into the hook, brilliant to hear from these guys! ☀️

The Wrap: May 2022 ✨

here’s our May edition of The Wrap! ✨ another incredible month of releases in the North, so many fantastic tunes coming out – way too many for us to mention here! you can check out all of our lil reviews below, have a gander 🤘

Scotland’s very own indie-punks Pizza Crunch have returned with another hard-hitting single “Young Excitement“! 🤘 following on from a superb string of singles, they’ve come back with this new single that really solidifies them as ones making movements on the circuit – a fantastic guitar riff throughout the track, backed by a rhythm section that simply grooves through the flow of the track, all strung together with a lovely singalong chorus reminiscent of 80’s punk and new wave bands. The key change in the last chorus is fantastic too, really elevating the track to another level. Class from the lads! (SPOTIFY / APPLE MUSIC / YOUTUBE / BANDCAMP)

We’ve covered Warrington’s own Scott and the Flying Kicks in the past with his past releases, but he’s returned here with a completely different, brand new venture in the form of his “Street Fighter” EP! Taking a much more electronic approach to his music, there’s so many elements to this EP – giving us vibes of The Streets and even hip-hop, with rapping throughout, fantastic to see so much variety from this fella. ☀️ covering lyrical topics ranging from politics, modern-day living and even parenting – this is a really well put-together EP with some brilliant use of sampling, beatmaking and lyricism. Well worth a listen! (SPOTIFY / APPLE MUSIC / YOUTUBE / BANDCAMP)

Greater Manchester post-punks Mort Jardin have returned with yet another explosive release, their brand new album “Lost Season“! Chock-full of the grungey riffs that we’re so used to from them now, this sounds so lovely – there’s a lot of melodic elements within the album that really let it soar through the tracks, but still maintaining that distortion and feedback that really signifies their sound. 😊 the songwriting on this is superb too, with imagery that induces such lovely atmospheres alongside the use of instrumentation and melodies – it’s well worth a listen, especially for anyone who has a thing for 90’s alternative and grunge. (SPOTIFY / APPLE MUSIC / YOUTUBE / BANDCAMP)

One of our favourite and most unique artists on the Manchester scene, FEAR OF MARKO has started fresh with a brand new single “Dizzy” 👊 such a huge song, with a proper singalong chorus that we’re sure will be absolutely explosive live – and lyricism that’s so personal and intimate, the flows within the vocal too really set this apart as one to put on repeat. Really well done – you can tell that time has been put into this to really hone their craft andd make something proper special. The production too is simply sublime, mixing grunginess with hyperpop and adding in more calm and acoustic elements to it too – it’s really worth listening to this, a fantastic track. We can’t wait to hear more! Also, the music video aesthetic is absolutely perfect for the track. (SPOTIFY / APPLE MUSIC / YOUTUBE / BANDCAMP)

One of our favourites on the Manchester scene, comedic songwriter Chris Tavener has returned with a full EP “Easy Ways To Be Happy“! Expanding out on his familiar satirical style that’s really defined his sound and made him a real force on the North West scene, he’s come back with a lovely collection of songs that sound absolutely fantastic. 🌞 There’s so much dynamic range to the tracks, ranging from singer-songwriter to more rock and roll, even with some more personal and touching tracks in there too. Well worth a listen, you’ll get a real insight into the world of Chris Tavener! (SPOTIFY / APPLE MUSIC / YOUTUBE / BANDCAMP)

Manchester indie-rockers Cottons have put out yet another fantastic tune, with a brand new single “So I’ll Call” 📞 the tune sounds brilliant, they’ve gone from strength to strength with every single release, expanding out their sound and honing their craft so well. They sound so tight on this track, the electronic elements and production really add a huge amount to the track, amount to the song, and the instrumentation really works so well in tandem with each other to make this an absolutely banger. Well worth catching them, they’ve been playing festival slots and we can only imagine they’ve got so much more coming up! (SPOTIFY / APPLE MUSIC)

Singer-songwriter Isaac Neilson has come back with a brand new single “Deep As A River“! This song sounds so lovely, the flow throughout is absolutely gorgeous with the violin runs throughout, and Isaac’s vocal runs so smoothly over the course of the track and then once you hear the other vocal, it sits so well in parallel to the rest of the track. As the track runs it’s course, the build is so lovely, with the vocals getting more intense, and distorted melodies on the guitar expanding out – such well done on the production here to keep the track moving so well. 😊 Absolutely brilliant stuff here, we’ve seen him perform a few times now and he’s a proper talent here in the North. We can’t wait to hear more from him! (SPOTIFY / APPLE MUSIC / YOUTUBE)

Liverpool acoustic singer-songwriter Evie Moran returns with her third single so far, “Disconnected” 👏 keeping true to her ethereal, dreamy sound, this track sounds absolutely gorgeous. Her vocal flows so soothingly across the track, and the acoustic melody is proper beautiful – a really intimate insight into Evie’s music. The production on this is top notch too, just perfect for the track with the calm drumbeat and the acoustic melodies played over the top of the guitar, and her songwriting on this is fantastic too – something we’ve grown accustomed to now with her! Definitely one to watch here, a real talent over in Merseyside who we’re sure will go on to do great things! (SPOTIFY / APPLE MUSIC / YOUTUBE / BANDCAMP)

another absolutely fantastic month for music up North! so many different and diverse artists all equally fantastic in their own right – it’s class to see so many brilliant musicians doing their thing, this is what makes the scene so incredible. big shout to everyone here! we hope you’ve enjoyed this as much as we have – big love to everyone who’s checked this out. ❤️

Just The Crust 30/05/22: Cliché Cult – Plastic World 🌍

our feature for today’s Just The Crust is the brand new single from Cliché Cult “Plastic World” 👊

we’ve been massive fans of these guys for a while now, having featured a fair bit of their music in the past and they only keep going from strength to strength with every release, showing their talent and versatility through all the tunes they put out ☀️

this new single “Plastic World” sounds absolutely top, maintaining their usual style but sounding slightly more lo-fi and relaxed – it’s got a lovely atmosphere of droney guitars and synths, the rhythm section really ties the whole track together too and keeps the groove, all whilst the main vocal commands control of the track and really lays the foundation for the story of the tune so well 🙌

what a chorus too! a massive singalong tune. we love the breakdown, and that guitar solo erupts into the track with such ferocity – absolutely stunning from the chaps. well worth a listen and we’re excited to see where the band goes from here! 😊

you can listen to the full track on all streaming sites and that, or otherwise the full music video is available on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q36_VajliZI – well worth checking out, the Leeds-based indie outfit have smashed it yet again. amazing to see! 🤘
