The Wrap: January 2022 ✨

we’ve just sorted our January edition of The Wrap for you guys! ☀️ there’s been some fantastic releases over this first month of 2022 and it’s brill to be able to write up a lil bit about em all. 😊 check out our reviews below!

Liverpool-based punks Tits Up are kicking things off in style this year with their debut release “Greatest Tits”! Reminiscent of post-punk and riot grrrl bands such as Bikini Kill, Sleater Kinney and Bratmobile, they’re really setting the bar for themselves with this EP. No-nonsense tracks that hold that classic punk sound and with so much self-appreciation and positivity in their lyrics, we absolutely love this! 🤘 gorgeous guitar riffs throughout, chunky basslines, massive drums, feedback and distortion all over the place, not to mention vocals that range from a delicate whisper all the way to all-out screaming, this is one powerful EP. We can not wait for more (ps we want to see you live. that’d be a hell of a gig!) (SPOTIFY / APPLE MUSIC / BANDCAMP)

One of our favourite unique talents of the scene, Hayden J Barlow returned with YET another single, “AL0NE”! It sounds so great, bringing together so many influences, from indie, to folk, to electronic, to soul.. too many to mention. That sub bass sounds so fantastic and really lays the foundation for the track – the electronic synths and little samples really create a layered and unique soundscape to the track; not to mention Hayden’s amazing vocal ability throughout the track. Not only is his main vocal on point, the harmonies are insane, the effects on the vocal are superb and just really shows the talent that he has with his vocal ability. 🙌 we love the end synths in that final section, really showing off the production and unique stylings of his capabilities. What a diverse talent! Well looking forward to what the future holds for him. (SPOTIFY / APPLE MUSIC / BANDCAMP)

Green Wire are back with a brand new tune, Mrs. Artois! Sounding boss, with that classic indie sound of their other singles, it’s opened up even more for them with elements of ska in that rhythm guitar, lovely riffing throughout the verse, and a bassline that really unites the two throughout the tune. 🎸 we’re massive fans of that synth lead too, it sounds super lush, and the vocals really glide across the track seamlessly whilst effortlessly telling their story. They’ve been gigging across Manchester a lot lately and we expect big things from them! (SPOTIFY / APPLE MUSIC)

Morecambe-based Inadequate Flaws have just released a brand new single “SAFTB”! 🏵 it sounds fantastic, with driving riffs, hard-hitting drums carrying the track along, and then a familiar Northern twang to the vocal, they’ve really created a unique sound for themselves with this tune. The imagery in the lyricism of this track is fantastic, really well written, feels like a proper night out up North. The b-side “Sorry” is a proper contrast to the a-side, something that we love. It’s a real introspective and personal track – the strings add so so much to it, and the feel to the track is so melancholic and mellow. What a release! (SPOTIFY / APPLE MUSIC)

A familiar sight on the Manchester scene, Migson Pollock has just put his debut EP “New Meigs on the Block”! It’s absolutely boss to be able to hear these tunes in a studio setting and he’s really outdone himself, really being able to transfer that live feel into the recording. Each of the tracks is unique in itself, yet maintains a sense of continuity across the EP in full – brilliant to see and such a show of his class and talent. 🎸 Migs sounds great on this, vocally and through the instruments, and this really shows how intricate and how much delicate effort is put into each track – well worth a listen. Our favourite has to be “One With The Daggers!” (SPOTIFY / APPLE MUSIC / BANDCAMP)

Hartlepool indie-rockers Leopard Rays return with yet another fantastic tune to their belt, “Something Like Hell”! 📼 following the success of their earlier tracks, they’ve gone for a calmer and mellow atmosphere for this, but with the charm of their usual sound! They’ve been smashing it out across the North East and we’re blown away with how incredible they’re sounding. Huge vocals throughout the tune, lovely songwriting and the band sounds absolutely class, guitar riffs, drum fills, vocal harmonies; it’s a real indication that these guys are gonna go super far. Not ones to sleep on! (SPOTIFY / APPLE MUSIC)

Manchester favourite Ayanam returns with a brand new single, following the success of his debut EP a few years back – “Back to Lagos” really shows Ayanam’s mellow and chilled side, a real personal song for him about the joys of travelling and returning back to his native Nigeria. The production on this sounds fantastic, really bringing a sunny and summery atmosphere to the song, and Ayanam’s vocal sounds heavenly throughout the song. 🤘 you can really feel his raw emotion and positivity throughout the lyrics and it’s a real testament to his fantastic songwriting ability! Amazing stuff. (SPOTIFY / APPLE MUSIC)

Manchester/Yorkshire-based Deano has just released their second single, “Good As Gold”! ☀️ an upbeat, feel-good tune with lovely pop elements, crunchy power chords throughout, it transcends the typical limits of genre; blending together rock and alternative with more electronic and pop influences to create a real unique sound. We absolutely love the guitar solo in it, and with expertly crafted sounds, personal and relatable lyrics, these are definitely ones to watch on the scene! (SPOTIFY / APPLE MUSIC)

Liverpool-based Gen and the Degenerates are back with yet another class single – following their previous releases, they’ve put out a new tune “Wild Thing“! 🤘 a huge anthemic song celebrating difference and diversity, with lovely riffs, massive drumbeats and fantastic vocals from Gen. We love the breakdown, really building up to that final chorus that just explodes into the catchy lyricism we’ve seen throughout each of their singles. Yet another incredible release, we can’t wait to see what 2022 holds in store for these guys! (SPOTIFY / YOUTUBE)

Sheffield-based songwriter Daz Cadwallander has been on our radar for a while now and we were amazed by his last release “On My Mind” – and he’s returned with an introspective and lovely single “When I’m“. ☀️ with heartfelt and personal lyricism, great vocals throughout and a lush atmosphere to the track, it’s a great listen and really shows off his songwriting ability. For fans of The Verve, Seahorses and old school 1990’s indie vibes – looking forward to see what he’s got for us next! (SPOTIFY / YOUTUBE)

One of our favourite songwriters on the Manchester scene, David Gorman has released a brand new tune “La Mort“! We’ve caught him performing a good few times in the past few years and he never fails to impress. We loved his 2019 release “Curses” (actually one of the first tracks on our Local Loaf playlist!) and this song only continues to show off his fantastic vocal ability, lovely songwriting style with such great storytelling, and the production on this is so lovely, with so many different instruments coming together to create such a great soundscape. 🏵 The harmonies throughout this are gorgeous, and really compliment David’s main vocal that really commanders the track and draws the attention to the imagery conjured throughout the song. Hoping to see more from him soon! (SPOTIFY / BANDCAMP)

Post-punk indie rockers Gdansk81 have returned with a brand new EP, “Star Of The Sea“! We had them perform for us back in 2019 over at The Old Abbey Taphouse and they played a fantastic set, performing songs from their first album which had some brilliant tunes on it – with driving riffs, a great connection between the band members and fantastic songwriting. 🤘 They’ve continued this through their new EP, with walls of sound and down-to-earth lyricism, we’re blown away with how great it sounds. Well worth the listen! (SPOTIFY / YOUTUBE / BANDCAMP)

Liverpool-based creative AnnieMUSIC has returned with a brand new single, “Tomorrow / Pedal“! Blending electronic atmospheres with distorted guitars, lovely vocals and subtle yet lovely lead riffs, it sounds super gorgeous. Reminiscent of artists such as Angel Olsen and Sharen Van Etten, there’s a real shine to these tracks and they sound absolutely fantastic. ☀️ even better in that it’s a double single, getting even more music from the release and the b-side “Pedal” has a gorgeous groove to it, with an almost industrial soundscape – we’d love to vibe to this tune in a music venue! Huge. Can’t wait to hear more! (SPOTIFY)

We’ve featured the fantastic Liverpool-based alternative rock outfit RIVIA in the past, with brilliant singles already under their belt – and this new tune “Wasted” sounds brilliant. With a luscious groove to the track, and fantastic vocals, suddenly opening up to a huge and explosive chorus, it’s really set them apart as ones to watch for 2022. 🙌 the breakdown is beautiful too, calming down to a mellow yet powerful atmosphere that really allows the final chorus to erupt into its full ferocity. Fantastic tune! Keep your eyes out for these guys this year. (SPOTIFY)

Another Liverpool-based artist, Torture and The Desert Spiders have been tearing it up across Merseyside over the past year or so – and they’ve just released a lovely acoustic album composed of 27 tracks! 😊 with such personal and retrospective lyricism, the songwriting on this album is absolutely fantastic – a really lovely unique style that really entices the listener in. It’s an album that you can really get lost in, with lovely vocals, minimalistic and mellow atmospheres throughout the full tracklist; sounding absolutely gorgeous and a really great collection of expertly-written tracks. Well worth checking out! (BANDCAMP)

Our final release here is actually a Christmas song from one of our favourite artists, YNES with “It’s Christmas (I Miss Ya)”! Continuing with that unique britpop/punk style we’ve seen throughout their releases, it’s got a lovely and mellow atmosphere to it with the lo-fi feel to it. The lyricism here is super personal, feeling almost effortless in the delivery and really shows off how unique and talented YNES’ creativity is. ❄️ we’re not usual fans of Christmas songs, but this might have just changed our minds! Sounding brilliant, if you’ve not heard this yet it’s definitely worth a listen. (BANDCAMP)

Lovely new EP from Blacksheeplad, a regular on our lil virtual open mic (fondly remembered 💔) it’s fantastic to hear all of these songs in studio format now, after hearing the progression of them live – plus, with his full band now, Phil really has been able to come into his own as an artist and expand his sound. Definitely worth a listen! [Spotify]

Lovely lovely tune from Glaswegian punks Book Klub – proper dirty, proper post-punk and proper class video accompanying the tune. Love the moody vibe of the track, and suddenly it erupts into the chorus and throws so much at you – only to drop back into reverby goodness of guitar resonance. Keep an eye out for these guys, they’re definitely gonna be packing out some dirty basement venues soon and we can not wait. 🍻 [Spotify / YouTube] [Released by Disobedient Records]

Lovely acoustic tune from Yorkshire-based songwriter Eli Rivers. A reflective song, with some lovely image-inducing songwriting and a lovely guitar line that simply adds a great flavour to the track. With a great video to go alongside it, this is essential listening for any folk and singer-songwriter fans in the North. Eli played our last virtual open mic and smashed it, too! Fantastic tune from North West-based indie outfit MCRAE! A huge tune, with massive vocals, lovely guitar tones, a simply fantastically well-crafted song that these lads will be absolutely made up with. Also, with a bloody fantastic break in it – a beautiful guitar line, with demanding and powerful lyrics, building up and up until a conclusive ending. Keep your eyes peeled for these lads, going to be making waves ✊ [Spotify / Video on FB]

Some ABSOLUTELY incredible tunes out this month, and realistically, we’ve barely even scratched the surface here. There’s so much to find, and with gigs coming back now – you’re sure that there’ll be even more on the way! Fantastic stuff. Love writing up these ones! ☀️ all music, videos and images remain copyright of their respective owners!
