we’re back with our next edition of The Wrap! 💿
we’ve got reviews covering some of our favourite releases from June, and it’s been yet another incredible month of Northern-based music! you can check out all of our reviews below ⬇️
Manchester-based experimental act Through the Gloom have just released their album “How to Start a Cult (Part II: The Flock)“! with gorgeous ambient drones, exquisite texturing and dark soundscaping, there’s a real passion in the craft of this release, evolving so well throughout the run order of the tracks. there’s such a fantastic use of melody, contrasted to the darker monotone and chromatic soundscaping, which culminates in an eerie yet engaging atmosphere. a lovely listen!
Sheffield’s melodic indie outfit Plasticine have just put out their new single “Pink Sky“! a luscious, dreamy track with a real drive to it, it opens up with hard-hitting percussion that is enveloped by soaring, atmospheric guitar patterns, grounded by the rhythm and bass working in perfect unison to form the foundation of the track. the vocals glide effortlessly, and with lovely melodies and harmonies, it sounds fantastic. they’ve crafted a lovely tune that’s definitely gonna be on repeat!
Derbyshire’s Marseille have just released their latest single “Where I Went Wrong“! we’ve covered their music a bunch previously and we’re always so in awe of their genre-blending, huge anthemic tracks – and this new tune sounds fantastic. opening with a chord progression that invokes a strong 90’s nostalgia, it’s got a real sense of intimacy to it, and it builds so effortlessly into the anthemic, huge chorus that they’re known for. another fantastic track under their belt to go along with their entire discography!
Alt-pop sensation Lavender Rodriguez has just released their newest single “CHAOS“! with infectious, driving energy right from the get-go, it’s got huge rhythm, pulsating drums and fantastic production. you can hear the creative process in this track, born from frustration and burnout, yet translated into a proper energetic anthemic track – there’s so many fantastic uses of instrumentation that all come together expertly. it’s well worth a listen!
we’ve covered Oh!Alfie’s music a bunch before, and we had him perform for us last year, and we were so blown away by his songwriting ability and his talent – this new single “8PM IN FUENGIROLA!” is true evidence of that! there’s a real groove behind the track, with a proper summer feeling to it, truly reflecting the title – Alfie’s vocal sounds fantastic here, inviting the listener into his world, and it’s such a well produced track, with lovely synths, rhythm and instrumentation really complimenting his lyricism and vocals. well worth checking out!
we found this album from a recommendation on Instagram, and we’re absolutely blown away by elucyve’s “Gentle Lunatic“! throughout the entire album there’s a sensational use of synthesisers and electronic elements, and the soundscapes and atmospheres present throughout are mind-blowing, consistently evolving and keep you wanting to hear more. during our first listen we were constantly entranced by such a range of instrumentation, unexpected production and seamless melodic quality – a contender for our album of the year list!
a firm favourite of ours on the scene, Pyncher have just released their latest EP “I Really Mean It This Time“! we’re huge fans of their infectious and energetic tunes, and this EP is a real show of their talent. with huge anthemic choruses, droney vocals and powerful guitar progressions, their ability to craft a singalong, feel-good tune is second to none. each track has a real individuality to it, and the flow of the EP is excellent – well worth a listen!
a familiar face for us on the Manchester scene, Emily Mercer has just released her new single “Read Aloud“! with a real relaxed, mellow atmosphere behind the track, it’s got a lovely pace to it, which compliments Emily’s vocal superbly, setting the scene for her to convey her emotion and feeling in exquisite prose, and not only does her talent lie in lyricism, her vocal melodies flow so smoothly across the track – it’s a gorgeous listen and such a fantastic show of her innate ability to create such raw, personal and emotive music!
it’s been another fantastic month, with so many amazing tracks coming out – plus, so many that we didn’t cover!
