Knead To Know: Dr Fabola 🥐

We’re back with our lovely Knead To Know feature, in a brand new format – we’ve put together an interview with the one and only Dr Fabola! 😊

we’ve known Dr Fabola for a long time now and he’s only gone from strength to strength over the past few years – with absolutely brilliant songwriting and guitarwork that is so intricate and lovely, it’s fantastic to see him putting out so many releases and songs. ☀️ we were hooked when we first heard “Sweetest Thing I Know” and we’re huge fans of his upbeat and positive songwriting style.

his new song “Autumn Dream” is super lush, maintaining his signature fingerpicking style on guitar, with gorgeous soundscaping around him and a lovely soft vocal from the man himself. 🤠 a perfect song to put on during these cold winter nights!

we’ll get into the interview now, shouldn’t we?!

So, tell us a little more about your latest release, Autumn Dream!

Autumn dream came on on Friday, 19th Nov, right in the middle of the Autumn season. I wrote this song as a sort of escape from the unfortunate events we’ve encountered in the last year and a half. We’ve been through an unprecedented couple of months, a harsh winter, an unusual spring and a summer that seems to have flown by. Now we’re entering Autumn and as we look forward to things getting better, I’d like to escape from the harsh realities and seek solace in the pleasures of the season – taking long walks in nature with loved ones, basking in the golden bliss, taking in the crisp cold air and just living in the moment. That’s my Autumn Dream, that’s what this song – this seasonal ballad – means to me.

What are your main influences within your songs – artists, music, the general world.. Lots of things often come into it!

My music has been influenced by so many musicians over the years. Bob Dylan’s story telling, Passenger’s fingerpicking, Tallest Man on Earth’s stage presence, Jack Johnson’s calming vibes, Jason Mraz’s sweetness, I could go on, but you get the idea. It’s all been a blend of my favourite folk, blues and pop musicians overtime. In general, my inspiration comes from everyday life.

How has the past year impacted your music and releases, or even live gigs and the such?

There are fewer venues and opportunities for gigging now due to the pandemic, but in recent weeks things have started opening up again, which is nice. Also, due to a lot of the closures, I’ve not done as much recording as I would have liked, but it’s all good because I’ve been fortunate enough stay creative and write alot, so the next time I’m in the studio, the problem will be choosing which songs to record 🙂

Which of your songs are you most proud of, and how come?

Something Good is one that I’m quite proud of. Sweetest Thing I Know is quite popular on the local scene as well. To be honest I think my best songs have not been released yet; some have been recorded and are going to be released in a few months so you’ll just have to wait and see 🙂

With regards to recording and studio time, how do you come into your own – what kinds of things do you do to get into the mood of recording?

I do a couple of breathing exercises to warm up my vocal cords. I also warm up my body (sometimes I do stretches or a few push-ups) to ensure I’m not too cold or stiff. Once my body is taken care of, I then need to immerse my mind into the music and get in the right headspace. It’s important for me to feel the music, the emotion, the vibes we’re trying to create in the studio, because if I don’t feel it, the recordings just won’t come out right.

What’s your favourite part about music – be it playing gigs, writing songs, collaborating with others, and how come?

I enjoy the creative process, writing songs, seeing them come to life in the studio and releasing them into the world. I also enjoy playing live, maybe this is my favourite part actually, being able to engage with an audience, share ideas with them and see how they respond 🙂

Have you got anything coming up that we should know about? Any gigs, music videos, more music, etc?

My next gig is at CPH for LongStoryShort on December 2nd. I’ve also got plans to release a few singles in the new year, and there are more music plans in the works as well. More info coming soon 🙂

well, there we have it 😎 amazing to see such a lovely insight into Dr Fabola’s world. make sure you head on over to his Spotify and check out the new song – it sounds proper lovely. we’re super stoked to have been able to put together these interviews, let us know what you think of them and we’ll be back with another one super soon! 🍞

we’re back with our next edition of The Wrap for you all! 🙌 there’s been some amazing music coming out in October and we’re stoked to be able to see it all!

it’s been absolutely fantastic to see so much brilliant music coming out as of late, and with bands and artists back gigging and putting stuff out, it’s definitely come back in force! 😊 check out our in-depth reviews below ⬇️

Chloe Jones has just released this absolutely beautiful tune – ‘New Mexico’ echoes country-esque melodies and soundscapes with some absolutely gorgeous vocals, beautiful imagery in her songwriting and harmonies reminiscent of 70’s folk artists. For sure one to check out! For fans of Joni Mitchell, Laura Marling and Angel Olsen. 🤠 Can’t wait to hear more! (SPOTIFY)

Lovely lo-fi synthpop from Firesites – we love the groove of the track, the guitars in it sound so gorgeous (we love a good vibrato!) 🎸 and that bassline just drives the track so so well. One to listen to at the end of your long day, sit back and relax with this calm and mellow tune. The trumpet solo adds so much to it as well… so well produced, and the video is perfect for the essence of the track. Keep an eye on these guys for sure! 😊 (SPOTIFY / YOUTUBE)

North Manchester-based alternative outfit Exist The Fall have just released their debut album “Jupiter” – beginning with a gorgeous instrumental with some beautiful guitar tones, it opens the rest of the album so well! Suddenly it’s heavy, punky, distorted, driving… it’s exactly what you want from a great alternative album. Great vocals throughout, driving basslines and drum fills, and then some fantastic riffing, this is definitely one to check out for all the heavier fans out there. 🤘 (SPOTIFY)

Manchester indie-rock band PAVÉ have just put out their third single “Come Alive” – with a beautiful lead guitar riff, fantastic vocals, and the rest of the band creating such a huge sound behind them, it’s fantastic to hear! 🙌 We can’t wait to hear this live, it’s one of those tracks that would just open up a crowd and ensue chaos. Can’t wait to see what’s next! (SPOTIFY / YOUTUBE)

Wow! What an absolutely beautiful tune from Manchester-based duo Days Are Done. Harmonies all over the shop, lovely guitarwork, ambient soundscaping… it’s so lush. We heard these at an open mic or two earlier in the year and were blown away and this song is a proper testament to their talents. Well worth a listen, R&B influence, indie vibes, so gorgeous – and such a huge chorus! (SPOTIFY / YOUTUBE)

MYOTO are back with their brand new single “two Step Sally” – and it sounds bloody great. Love the 80s influence in this with the synths and the drums, so huge – fantastic vocals throughout and the build throughout the track is super lush. 😎 the massiveness of the bridge is so great too, using all the elements at their disposal to create a fantastic track! Can’t wait to see what these guys have got for us next! (SPOTIFY / YOUTUBE)

Another lovely release from BlackSheepLad – “Pantomime” has an eerie atmosphere to it, bringing a new level to Phil’s music that we’ve not really seen before! The vocal melodies in the chorus are great, and the track sounds fantastic. Another great tune in BlackSheepLad’s discography! (SPOTIFY)

What a release from one of our favourites, Toria Wooff! “James Edward” is a song we’re very familiar with from gigs in the past, but the essence of it is captured here so perfectly. So well produced and recorded, it really does the song justice – the groove in the second verse is beautiful and the instrumentation, with organs, dulcimers, slide guitar… brilliant, brilliant stuff. The 70’s atmosphere of the video too is spot-on for Toria too, well worth a watch. She only goes from strength to strength and simply astounds us with each release!! ❤️ (SPOTIFY / YOUTUBE)

This month has been absolutely fantastic for music and releases. We can’t capture them all here, else we’d be writing essays, but it’s so lush to be able to bring you all this amazing talent each month! ☀️ we love this one and find so much amazing new music for it! 🤘

Make sure you head on down to open mics, gigs, support local music and arts and keep your scenes going! 😊 all music, videos and images remain copyright of their respective owners. 🍞

Just The Crust 08/11/21: Cottons – Breathe ☀️

our feature for today’s Just The Crust is the latest single from Cottons “Breathe”! 🤘

we had these guys on a few years ago down at The Old Abbey Taphouse for a headline gig and it’s been absolutely amazing to see them going from strength to strength and evolving their sound, a real class indie-rock band here in Manchester. 😊

their latest tune here has been out for a little while now, but they’ve just released this music video for it and we definitely recommend checking it out – the song itself is super as well, starting out nice and relaxed, building up and up throughout til it explodes into a wall of sound at the end ☀️ absolutely fantastic vocals here, the songwriting gives you a fantastic story and message that they’re trying to convey and the band sounds so tight together. 🪐 amazing stuff!

head on over to YouTube at https://youtu.be/5cpiIDL27-c to find the video in full, or alternatively you can stream the tune on all streaming platforms. 😎 give it a whirl and add it to your playlists! can’t wait to see what these guys have got for us next!

Just The Crust 01/11/21: David Shurr – Under The Hood ☀️

our feature for today’s Just The Crust is the brand new album from David Shurr “Under The Hood”! 🥪

a full-length album of twelve songs, this album truly shows off Shurr’s fantastic ability as a songwriter and an artist. 😊 blending psychedelic atmospheres with folky and indie genres, he’s able to create his own imprint on the musical scene and we love the relaxed and mellow vibes of it. 🤘

not only that, the production on the album is lovely, with expertly crafted soundscapes from the instrumentation, and Shurr’s vocals sound fantastic on this – brilliant work from all involved here. 🤠 from the relaxed and airy opener “Top To Bottom”, the album then evolves through songs like the acoustic ballad of “Never Grown” and then through to the bluesy “The Thread Connecting Us” 🌠 absolutely fantastic range of tunes whilst still maintaining his unique style.
