Knead to Know: Scott Magnus ๐ŸŒ›

we’re back with our next Knead To Know interview today, with the amazing Scott Magnus! ๐Ÿค˜

it’s fantastic to be able to speak with Scott here, he’s a super talented artist based here in Manchester and over the past year or two he’s been releasing banger after banger, getting some amazing recognition for his work and doing super well. we love his unique blend of genres, mixing together rapping, indie rock and even elements of metal in his music to create something truly his own style! ๐Ÿ‘Š

he’s just released his debut EP “COMEBACK STRONGER” which sounds absolutely brilliant, a fantastic collection of songs that really give you a true insight into his life and experiences – we really loved the singles prior to the release of the album and this only exceeds our expectations! find our full interview with him below! ๐Ÿ‘‡

Hey Scott, weโ€™re delighted to be able to have a chat with you about your music here. Youโ€™ve released a few singles in the past – tell us a little bit about them and what they mean to you!

A lot of my singles have been about personal development whether that be embracing being an introvert but recognising the need to stay connected on โ€˜Lone Wolfโ€™ or trying to learn and come back stronger back from failure and a fall from grace with โ€˜The Phoenixโ€™. These two singles were written quite a while ago and were singer-songwriter pop with elements of trap and electro.

My latest single โ€˜Donโ€™t Take Away My Purposeโ€™ was the least introspective, it was assertive and fierce as it explored challenging a naysayer trying to make me stop doing what I love and be someone iโ€™m not. This was my most eclectic song yet it built and built starting with indie/ neo soul/ chill rap then going into electro pop, hiphop then into grunge/ pop rock.

Your new EP is out now! How was it releasing a full-length EP?

It was really satisfying to tell a story through music in a way that my previously singles havenโ€™t allowed me to. The story is one that is very personal to me and tackles the challenges I face as someone with learning difficulties. This is a topic which is rarely looked at and a voice that we rarely hear from so it was great to have the chance to express this point of view so candidly and authentically. I wanted people to see how challenging life with learning difficulties can be and despite that you can prevail if you focus on what you can do, learn from your mistakes and work hard. I hope this can inspire and comfort those struggling with the challenges I face or any of the challenges they face in their lives.

The response from people who listen to the whole EP was great. Many reported feeling inspired and uplifted which is exactly what I had hoped.

Where did you record the album? What was involved in the creation of it?

I recorded the album/ EP at Tngeyโ€™s studios in Blackpool. The process of creating it involved me composing a demo at home. Sometimes I would write the song solo on guitar first and sometimes I would write the song initially on a logic project. Iโ€™d make use of the instrument packs like Omnisphere and also the sample database Splice. Iโ€™d then take the demo to the studio, record guitars, vocals and then my good freind Tngey would take things to another level with his mind blowing production!

What inspires you to write songs? Have you got a creative process when youโ€™re writing / creating?

Iโ€™m often inspired to write song when something poignant, dramatic and interesting happens to me and I have something I really want to say! My process will frequently involve me coming up with an instrumental or beat on logic then improvising to it, I will keep the best melodies and then make sense/ refine my lyrics in a notepad.

Who produces your music? (If yourself, just talk about the production elements and inspirations)

Tngey produced my Ep. He is incredibly skilled, talented but also really receptive and adaptable to the directions I would like to take things sonically. The imprint of where I want to take things will be in the demo I make at home but he can bring something really fresh to the table!

Tell us a bit about your musical journey – where did you start and what has made you evolve to where you are now?

I started playing guitar at 11 and I started writing songs at 15. I had a hiatus for a few years while pursuing acting blinkeredly but I decided to pursue music more seriously two years ago. To get back into it I started by learning covers and making songs on logic. I was on Contact theatres online music course which really challenged me to push my music skills in different directions such as writing a score to a short film. I have been working on my guitar, singing and production skills trying to learn more challenging covers each time. I have been searching for better and more interesting musical influences and trying to bring them together in a powerful and unique way – Iโ€™m trying to innovate!

How did the lockdowns impact you as a musician? What did you do throughout them? Did it get in the way of any projects?

The lockdowns were a positive impact on me as a musician. I was a key worker for a lot of it but for the first few months I was able to have more time to work on my music than before. I wrote songs did covers and also started making sketch comedy which has become a key part of the content that I make.ย

When youโ€™re performing live, do you have any rituals to get into the mindset of it all? What do you enjoy most about it all?

I like to do yoga and exercise the day of a performance if I can. This keeps me alert and energised. I love the freedom on stage to express myself and to entertain the audience!

Weโ€™ve seen a great deal of interest in your singles – what kinds of responses have you had from fans or press?

The response has been really positive. People seem to respond really well to the fact I merge many genres and my songs have positive motivational messages! I have been lucky enough to receive press from publications such as Earmilk and Rolling Stone India.

Have you got anything coming up in 2022 we should know about?

My biggest single โ€˜Smirkedโ€™ will be coming out later this year and with a badass music video for it. It is a real culmination of the sound I have been trying to hone, a sound which combines, rock, melodic rap and trap and pop!

it’s been super lovely to chat with Scott here and see his perspective and journey – it’s so inspiring to hear about everyone’s different challenges and how they overcame hurdles to get to where they want to be. โ˜€๏ธ brilliant to see, and he’s very deserving of the success he’s got, the EP sounds brilliant and well worth checking out!

our feature for today’s Just The Crust is the brand new single from Scatterchild “Staring Me Down”, out this coming Friday 29th April! ๐Ÿ‘Š

we’ve known Scatterchild for a good while now, having featured a bunch of their amazing releases on the website, caught them at plenty of gigs here in Manchester and even put them on a few lineups ourselves – they always put on a top show, with such energy, intimacy and power to their sets ๐Ÿค˜

this new tune only continues in a long line of brilliant releases from the indie-folk outfit, with beautiful melody lines throughout, and the track builds and builds throughout each verse to reach a huge chorus chock-full of vocal harmonies and such powerful lyricism from Jay – really proving his vocal ability in this track! โ˜€๏ธ

we love the bridge in this, dropping to create a real intimate connection with the listener, only to open back up to a huge chorus and ending off the track with a beautiful outro that just simply puts the song at ease. a really well-crafted track from the lads! ๐Ÿ˜Š

we did an interview with Jacob previously as part of our Knead To Know feature and his approach to music and creativity is simply inspiring – a real lovely lad with so much talent! ๐Ÿ˜Š

this new single is a rework of one of his previous releases – that came out just as the lockdowns were implemented so he’s fancied redoing it and it sounds fantastic! you can really hear the Frank Turner inspiration in this but he’s kept it to his own sound really well ๐Ÿ‘Š a massive tune about growing up and keeping to your roots – so well written!

the chorus in this is huge – we can really hear this one being belted out from the crowd at his gigs, his songwriting here is on point and you can really feel the intimacy of his lyrics in it – sounds absolutely brilliant, big things on the way for this young chap! ๐Ÿ˜Ž

The Wrap: March 2022 โœจ

here’s our March edition of The Wrap for you all! โœจ what a brilliant month of class releases up North here, so fantastic to see it all going on. we love writing up these and you can find all of our lil reviews below! ๐Ÿค˜

Manchester-based indie outfit The Perps have returned with their brand new single “Wake Up On Saturday“! Starting out with a lovely flowing melody that really sets the scene for the track, and a rhythm section that adds so much power behind it all, it sounds super lovely. The vocals on this are fantastic, really commanding the attention throughout and such a catchy chorus – a real feel good tune to bring us into these summer months! A great unique sound to these guys, well worth a listen for anyone who’s into their indie and rock music. We love that guitar solo too, flowing seamlessly and so melodic! ๐Ÿ™Œ (SPOTIFY / APPLE MUSIC / YOUTUBE)

A familiar face on the Manchester scene now, Green Wire have brought out yet another banger “Cigarettes On The Dancefloor“! A real lovely atmosphere to the track, with a huge intro that drops into the verse where the vocal sounds class, really huge energy and dynamic to it – we’d absolutely love to see this live at a gig! The little guitar licks in the background are super lush too, really creating a solid foundation to the track. There’s a few little nods to Manchester within the lyrics too, super cheeky but we love it. The guitar solo in this sounds massive too, so much power to it and it really takes control over the track. Another fantastic release from these guys, keep an eye on them for sure! ๐Ÿ‘Š (SPOTIFY / APPLE MUSIC / YOUTUBE)

Leeds-based Lost Hive have brought out their debut single “Confessions“! With a beautiful groove to the track, it starts out on such a strong front, with all the elements working perfectly in sync together. The main vocal here is relaxed and delivers the story so well, whilst still keeping the listener engaged – and the backing vocals only add to this, with lovely contrasts between the both to balance them out nicely. The breakdown is perfect, dropping away to a real soft feeling only to drop back into that final chorus that explodes! The music video is high-octane too, well worth a watch. Can’t wait to see what these guys have in store! โ˜€๏ธ (SPOTIFY / APPLE MUSIC / YOUTUBE)

Liverpool-based RATS have been on our radar for a while now, with so many fantastic releases under their belt already and they’ve returned with a massive banger here. “Jenny” is delivered so well, and they’ve got such a knack for storytelling and in such a unique style, really setting them apart! We love that their Scouse accents are a huge part of the track, really solidifying their sound – and that breakdown with the harmonising backing vocals is simply beautiful! Well, well, well worth listening to, these guys have been making huge waves lately and this only shows that they’re destined to go far. ๐Ÿ˜Ž (SPOTIFY / APPLE MUSIC / YOUTUBE)

Manchester’s own indie-pop pioneers Foxglove have returned with yet another brilliant single “Lights Off“! Instantaneously dropping into a beautiful soundscape of euphoric-like vibes, this sounds fantastic right from the get-go. The use of space, delay and reverb in this is spot on – really making the use of everything in their arsenal to create such a lovely styling of dream-pop influenced indie rock. Lead singer Abi’s vocal sounds absolutely gorgeous here, the use of backing vocals to compliment her lead in the chorus is class, fantastic stuff! Well worth watching the video too, such a great concept and delivers the story so well in tandem with the lyricism. Keep your eyes peeled for these guys! ๐ŸŒ› (SPOTIFY / APPLE MUSIC / YOUTUBE)

PAVร‰ have been on the scene for a while now, and we’ve been huge fans of their singles to date – this EP “Distraction” really brings them all together in a beautiful and such well-crafted manner! With huge guitar riffs, massive rhythm sections to compliment Alanya-Jade’s tremendous vocal throughout, it’s well worth a listen if you’re after huge, powerful tunes. ๐Ÿค˜ There’s even a new song on the EP too, “Cherry Blossom” which we love, super melodic and intricately put together to really relay the lyrics – it’s a gorgeous track and a brilliant addition to the rest of the tracks. Definitely worth checking this EP out! (SPOTIFY / APPLE MUSIC / YOUTUBE)

We’ve been in awe of Gen and the Degenerates ever since we heard their first single – with such raw power, huge soundscapes and an incredible vocal from Gen, they’ve made absolute scenes with their music. This EP “Only Alive When In Motion” is insane. They’ve pulled out all the stops for this, every song is a banger and only improving on their already brilliant sound, we’re blown away by it! We knew these guys were going places already, but this release has to definitely set them as ones to watch on the entire UK scene. Each song is unique but maintains that familiar sound we’ve come to see from the band, with fantastic choruses, beautiful guitar licks, huge rhythm to it all.. it’s expertly written, produced and just shows off simply how talented these guys all are. A definite listen. (SPOTIFY / APPLE MUSIC / BANDCAMP / YOUTUBE)

We’ve known Ethan AKA Black Brunwicker for a good while now here at the label, he’s a familiar face on the Manchester scene with his delicate and intricate soundscapes, beautiful melodies and he’s just a real lovely chap. This album “High Peaks” is simply beautiful, really showing off his unique talent to create atmospheres that really suck the listener in – with expertly crafted songs that have such life to them. The use of space and ambience throughout is so well done, every single aspect of the tracks seem so perfectly positioned within the soundscape and we’ve had such a lovely time listening to this! It’s even available on vinyl too for anyone who fancies it, and it’s a real lovely addition to anyone’s music library. ๐ŸŽธ (SPOTIFY / APPLE MUSIC / YOUTUBE / BANDCAMP)

the calibre of talent here for this one has been absolutely beautiful. it’s so brilliant to see such a wide and diverse range of music and artists here, really special to see – it’s what makes the music scene so fantastic, we love to see it. we love this feature, being able to listen and write up about so much incredible music and we hope you guys have enjoyed them as much as we did! a big thank you to everyone whos read through it all! ๐Ÿ•

Just The Crust 11/04/22: Black Brunswicker – High Peaks๐ŸŒ›

our feature for today’s Just The Crust is the brand new album from Black Brunswicker “High Peaks”! โ˜€๏ธ

ever since we met Ethan, we’ve been in awe of his talent crafting soundscapes with his acoustic guitar through the use of pedals, and his gorgeous melodies and atmospheres really set him as a one of a kind here in Manchester. ๐Ÿ˜Š

his album here “High Peaks” is a beautiful collection of his music, it’s a really lovely experience listening through to it all, with a really peaceful and serene ambience to it – beautiful guitar melodies that seem to just float throughout the bars, and you can really see the time and effort he’s put into each of the tracks, a very well-crafted collection of tunes here. ๐Ÿ™Œ

he’s released this album through Australian label Ramble Records and they’ve even got a vinyl pressing lined up for it which sounds amazing to us! ๐Ÿค˜ it’s well worth a listen and you can find it on all streaming platforms, including Bandcamp at https://black-brunswicker-ramble-records.bandcamp.com/album/high-peaks where you can pre-order it on vinyl and support his music directly. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Just The Crust 04/04/22: Chris Tavener – Right Back Again โ˜€๏ธ

our feature for today’s Just The Crust is the brand new single from Chris Tavener “Right Back Again” out now! โ˜€๏ธ

another in a long line of fantastic releases from Chris, this new single is sublime – with a touch of his usual witty lyricism and tongue in cheek style, he’s taking a slightly more serious note on this track, and he’s really crafted a lovely tune here! ๐Ÿ‘Š

resting on a bed of a lovely chord progression, his vocal seamlessly glides over the song, and the chorus sounds absolutely lush – we can imagine this to be a real singalong one over at gigs. ๐Ÿค˜ the relaxed soundscape behind the track is gorgeous too, with luscious lead guitar riffs and piano melodies that really compliment his vocal super well here.

it’s really nice to see the variety here, moving away from his comedic and witty style (which of course we love!) to a more serious note – a real talent being able to manoeuvre through songwriting like this. well worth giving this one a listen, you can find it over on Spotify at https://open.spotify.com/artist/0Wqjp93HsOwxt4FyXQCYyY ๐Ÿ˜Š

this music video will also be out on Friday – it looks absolutely amazing and we’re really excited to see the full thing. make sure you head on over to his socials this coming Friday to be the first to see it! ๐Ÿ˜Ž

we’ve known Katie for a long time now, she’s been performing on the North West scene for ages and her unique and gritty sound has always stood her out as one to watch, with some incredible songs, top performances and a lovely personality it’s always great to catch her play and hear her music! ๐Ÿ˜Ž she’s now performing with a band for her solo music and we absolutely love these new tunes, so much energy and power to her sets now which is fantastic to see.

She’s just released her brand new EP “Dirt On My Knees” so we decided it’d be lovely to get an interview with her about it – read it all below! ๐Ÿค˜

Hey Katie, it’s fantastic to be able to get you on this and have a little chat about your music! You’ve just released your brand new EP “Dirt On My Knees” – tell us a little bit about it.

So most of the songs are familiar sounding as they’re my latest singles I’ve released over the past year: Taste the Dirt, Devil’s Got a Hold and Traveller with one extra song Feeling It. I wanted to make a record where people could physically own the songs and a place where I could own them too. I’m proud of these songs and felt they deserved to be on a record.ย

How long have you been doing music, and what drove you to start?

I’ve been singing since I was 14 which is probably later than most. I wasn’t one of these that have been singing since they could talk. I was brought up with a lot of music around me but never believed I could do it. My dad is a massive music fan and gave me my love for soul & blues music but he listens to anything and everything and so do I. But to answer your question I’ve been writing songs for about 10 years now. I loved hearing Aretha Franklin, Janis Joplin, Elkie Brooks and my fave film is The Commitments people singing with guts and soul and that’s what I wanted to do but I have so many inspirations and my writing style was inspired more from folk music, Bob Dylan and Laura Marling just to name a few!ย

When we first met you, you were an acoustic country/Americana solo artist – how has your music evolved since then?

The sound is definitely heavier than how I first started out on my own but I love that. I feel I’ve been able to encompass so many of my inspirations into one sound and take people on a journey of high energy and also the more mellow folkier sound I started out with. People change and grow and so it makes sense the music will too.ย

You’ve now got a band, who we must say sound fantastic – how did this come about and what do you enjoy most about playing with a band?ย

The lads are great aren’t they. The band have evolved the sound so much. I loved writing these melodic quite airy folky songs but my voice just wanted to belt it out and I struggled with the balance of that for a while but when I got the band behind me it opened up the way I could write and also what they bring to it. We’ve had quite a few line up changes along the way but all the players I’ve had have been great. They’re not just people that play their instruments well they know how to serve the song and bring out it’s best it’s what I look for and it’s so important. I love playing live with them too. I can honestly say it’s the best feeling!ย

When it comes to your music, what would you say are your main inspirations for creating and writing?

I don’t tend to sit down knowing what I’m going to write about most of the time. I kind of write subconsciously and after a few lyrics I analyse what it means and what I’m trying to tell someone or even myself. We’re constantly affected by what’s going on around us even if we don’t realise it at the time. It’s quite a cathartic experience and sometimes a little scary. It’s like my own personal therapy session sometimes haha.

When youโ€™re writing songs, do you have any processes or ways of getting into the right mindset for it?

Sometimes I’ll just put some music on and listen for a few hours and then later on in the day a song starts to form, if I do straight after listening I’ll probably just end up rewriting a song I was listening to haha, but if I give some space in between it comes quite naturally. I know I need a clearer mind space to do it which can be hard because I know naturally I’m quite an erratic person.ย

How did the lockdowns impact you as a musician? What did you do throughout them? Did it get in the way of any project?

I felt I was still able to achieve some things. I was lucky I had just recorded Wild West before lockdown happened and I wasn’t letting lockdown get in the way of the music video but I was just like go with it you have these restrictions but instead of thinking of them like that think of them more as guidelines. So my sister was in the video as she was staying with me, we filmed outside and that worked out. Looking back I wish I had wrote more than what I did but I released some live vids which I might not have done if it wasn’t for lockdown.ย

We’ve seen you perform a whole bunch now, but what do you enjoy most about it?

I just love singing my heart out. Especially when you’re singing songs you’ve wrote and the band are playing their souls out too. I’m such a nostalgic person and I feel we could be on stage in the 70s somewhere haha it’s a nice image.ย

How has your EP and singles been going lately – what response have you got from audiences and fans?

Both Taste the Dirt and Devil’s Got a Hold have been quite popular. They’re definitely crowd pleasers live and I think this has transcended to the online streams too. It’s so nice to hear when people say ‘oh I had your song stuck in my head today’ love that!ย

Where do you record your songs?

I record with Adam at Pinhole Sound I always go back to him as I feel he really captures my voice and the sound of the band. We also recorded some live sessions at Green Velvet Studios with Johnny which was a great experience! I always feel we’re at our best live and wanted to capture this.ย

Have you got anything coming up in 2022 we should know about?

Yes, I’ve steadily been releasing our live sessions from Green Velvet we have more to come and we’re releasing a record of them too. We also have some great gig dates in the diary we’re headlining at Deaf Institute 30th June which I’m so excited for and for anyone wanting tickets they’re available from my website www.katieomalley.co.uk – We’ve also got some great festivals coming up throughout Summer too including Buckle and Boots and The British Country Festival where Tom Oddell is playing so can’t wait to see him play too!

It’s great to be able to chat with Katie here about her music, and her journey and experiences – it’s super inspiring to see such great progress and just getting on with putting out and playing music that you enjoy with people! โ˜€๏ธ you can really tell Katie’s passion for her music and we absolutely love the EP – a really strong collection of songs that are a must listen here in the North West. seeing her grow as a musician over the past few years has been fantastic and we really love her new sound – it’s definitely worth catching her at any gigs she’s playing at! ๐Ÿ˜Ž

a big thank you to Katie for answering these questions for us – you can find her new EP “Dirt On My Knees” at https://open.spotify.com/album/6jybbKOOevbA26uaeAwzBm and her headline gig sounds fantastic (tickets!) ๐ŸŒ› we hope that you enjoyed this feature as much as we did – let us know what you think! ๐Ÿฅช

Just The Crust 21/03/22: The Sewer Cats – Answer The Question ๐Ÿ‘Š

our feature for today’s Just The Crust is the brand new single from one of our favourites on the scene, The Sewer Cats with “Answer The Question”! ๐Ÿ‘Š

ever since we caught them live back in 2019 before the pandemic, and heard their debut EP “Zelda”, we’ve been massive fans of their ferocious energy, driving guitar riffs and no-nonsense lyrics ๐Ÿค˜ they’re a force to be reckoned with live, one of the loudest bands we’ve heard and they’re only a two-piece! absolutely fantastic to see.

this latest single sees them continuing in this fashion, with luscious feedback and distortion everywhere, guitar riffs that really push the track forward and some of the angriest vocals that we’ve heard Cass do yet! ๐Ÿ• really pouring the anger into this, it’s a real testament to the underground punk scene and a real declaration towards the actions of the government over the past few years. ๐ŸŽธ we absolutely love the breakdown too, the riffs and melodies accompany the drums and lovely fills so well and it’s definitely one to check out for anyone who loves a good bit of punk/riot grrrl tunes.

you can find the full video over on YouTube at https://youtu.be/16j9eEGBY8A – well worth a watch, it really delivers on the impact of the track and another fantastic release on the TNSrecords roster! ๐Ÿค˜ you can also find the track on all streaming platforms as always!

Just The Crust 14/03/22: VALA – This Town โ˜€๏ธ

our feature for today’s Just The Crust is the brand new tune from VALA “This Town”! ๐Ÿ‘Š

we’ve had VALA on our radar for a while now and they’ve put out some incredible releases, they’ve got such a lovely unique sound to their music and the Manchester-based band have only been going from strength to strength with each release and gig they’ve played – selling out shows across the country, how boss ๐Ÿ˜Ž

this new tune is super lovely, a real indie-rock banger from the lads. the elements of lo-fi in the track really give it a personality and with lovely lyricism, a chorus that sticks in your head like glue, and string ensembles really complimenting the rest of the instruments, it’s one not to miss out on! ๐Ÿค˜ we love the bridge too with that autotuned vocal, really gives the track an edge and brings it into a lovely breakdown. fantastic stuff from these guys and released with the class talents of Shoplifters Union! ๐Ÿ˜Š
