The Wrap: May 2024 ✨

we’re back with our newest edition of our The Wrap feature, with reviews of some of our favourite releases from last month, May 2024! 🌮 another incredible month of music, with so many amazing tracks being released – here’s just a few of our favourites! you can find all of our reviews below! ⬇️

Swansea-based indie-rock outfit Subterrania have just dropped their their single “Knows Me Too Well“! After performing across the UK at multiple gigs, festivals, and off the resounding success of their previous tracks, they’ve smashed it with this new one. Lots of Madchester vibes in there, a sense of psychedelic influence, and it’s a good old no-nonsense indie tune. The track still feels new and fresh yet touches greatly on the 90’s reminiscence – lots of guitar solos throughout and great rhythmic elements; a fantastic feel-good track that anyone will be able to enjoy.

We’ve covered Isaac Neilson’s tracks a bunch in the past, we love his tracks, and we’ve had him perform for us a bunch too, with fantastic stage presence, great lyricism and upbeat and energetic vibes throughout – this new single “The Fight Within Us” is a perfect embodiment of it all! There’s a lovely jarring lead guitar riff throughout, that feels slightly off, yet still holds together so well – and the drumwork in the back gives the track a fantastic rhythm, and the bass accentuates it further, giving the track so much room to breathe, and for Isaac to take control with his powerful vocal, commanding attitude and intricate lyricism. A great tune!

Here at the label, we’re absolutely huge fans of Sugarstone – having not only had them perform for us at our On The Irwell festival but seeing them plenty of times, and they always know how to put on an absolutely astounding show. Their tunes are genre-defying, energetic, lyrically adept and thoughtful; being able to produce something fresh and new every single time. This new single “In Tatters” sounds fantastic, with a gorgeous riff leading the way, the lead vocal commanding the track, the rhythm elements in perfect unison to lay the foundation – and that synth at the end feels so nasty and intense but lifts the track perfectly for the climatic ending. Unreal as ever!

We had Rose Oleria perform for us last year at our headline with Scatterchild, and we were blown away by her stage presence, her ability to encapsulate an audience – her new single “Stranger” here only exemplifies that ability. An intricate, gorgeous track with a huge atmosphere behind it, a lovely interaction of pianowork and guitarwork creating a luscious space for her vocal to control the listener’s attention. With honest, raw and direct lyrics, and her vocal capabilities are on full show here; what a voice and what a talent. The dynamic of this track only compliments her songwriting skills, rising and falling perfectly to really prove the quality of the tune. Incredible to see!

Dream-pop extraordinaire Hannah Robinson has just returned with her brand new single “I’m Sorry I Let You Down“! We had her perform for us at The Castle in the past and we were amazed by her effortlessly cool grungey shoegaze vibes, unleashing a horde of dreamy tunes upon the crowd – such an incredible songwriter and her band working in perfect unison to give them a lovely atmosphere. This new single is fantastic, touching way more on a 90’s alternative vibe but still maintaining the atmosphere of her previous tracks – it’s got a lovely groove behind it and it’s a proper intimate tune, with raw and passionate lyricism – plus with a luscious soundscape, an incredible breakdown and a proper singalong chorus.. we can’t wait to hear even more.

We’ve known Mathew Kerry for a real long time now, having been acquainted with his music for a good number of years; he’s not only an incredible songwriter but an all-around lovely chap. This new release “The Shawton Suite” from him is gorgeous, we heard a track or two from it when he played for us in March, but the release oozes authenticity, intimacy and rawness – you love to see it. His lyrical melodies, use of language and lyricism is second to none; he can string together a gorgeous line so easily. There’s a lovely range of vibes on this, ranging from a more sombre tone to more feel-good and upbeat; his songwriting capability and talent is on full show here, a fantastic listen.

We’ve loved each and every one of Tallulah Guard’s releases so far, having had them perform for us a bunch and them play alongside some of our favourite Manchester artists – their new single “All The People I’ve Been” is an incredible show of their talent. It’s an incredibly emotional and raw track, dealing with identity and their desire to be seen for who they are; the lyricism throughout this is absolutely unreal, a direct and passionate tune that will make anyone empathise with their feelings. With lovely vocal melodies, a fantastic singalong chorus and just a proper sense of realness through it – this track is a fantastic indication of how incredible Tallulah’s music really is.

When Luc Garrett performed his headline show for us last year, we were blown away by the effortless connection that him and his band had, weaving melodies and linking up throughout every bar of every song – this new single “Hold On” is a gorgeous show of all of that. We were huge fans of his previous tunes, and he’s gone even further with this one – with a gorgeous atmosphere to the track, elevating his intimate and raw lyricism, his soft and gentle vocal commanding the space, each instrument working in perfect harmony to create a dreamy soundscape, a real sense of calm and bliss can be found in this track and we’re massive fans of it. Brilliant to listen to!

we loved their previous releases, and this new tune only exceeds our expectations; a more atmospheric intro compared to their previous tracks, but with a gorgeous groove setting the scene, with Maria’s vocals gracefully taking control of the soundscape – and the drop into the guitar riff is absolutely lush.. a fantastic riff that commands your attention immediately. the balance of the vocal and the guitar is so lovely, complimenting each other perfectly throughout – and set to a really tight rhythm section that just completes the sound perfectly. 💥 another incredible tune under their belt!

REVIEW: Cottons – Second Hand Living Room 👊

Manchester’s own Cottons have just released their brand new single “Second Hand Living Room“, an explosive return from the alternative-pop outfit 💥 we’ve been huge fans of these guys for a long time now and their incredible back catalogue of releases sees another massive tune added to it!

We first had Cottons perform for us way back in 2019 or so, before the pandemic and they blew us away with their incredible stage energy, upbeat and catchy tunes, their ability to write an incredible hook and the innate chemistry within the band 🤝

You can really hear it in this new song, with gorgeous guitar melodies lacing the track – the tone is luscious, and paired with the synth lead it combines for an infectious upbeat feel!

The track has a fantastic groove behind it, with a drumbeat that feels not only confident and tight but has a real element of dynamic throughout, matching perfectly to the bassline – giving so much room within the track for the vocal to take centre stage!

It’s a real singalong tune, with the main vocal utilising a lovely melody throughout – plus, with a catchy chorus hook, intricate and descriptive lyricism, and the offset vocal melody of the second verse contrasting to the first; definitely a proper summer feel to this one! ☀️

you can find the track in full on all streaming platforms – it’s another incredible tune under their belt and we can’t wait to see where they go next! definitely worth checking out all of their tracks, we’ve covered their music a bunch; a fantastic band! 🙌

you can hear inspiration from so many areas, from post-punk to industrial to hip-hop, utilising as many elements at their disposal to really create something truly unique. the contrast between the calmness of the verses to the chaos of the breaks and choruses sets a frantic but luscious soundscape, and the vocals command the listener’s attention throughout – an incredible first release of the year for them! 🤝

The Wrap: April 2024 ✨

we’ve got our newest edition of our The Wrap feature, covering a bunch of our favourite releases of April 2024 🌮 there’s been so many amazing tunes coming out, and here’s just a few of our favourites! you can find all of our reviews below ⬇️

Manchester-based The Cutter have just released their brand new single “Pulling Me In“! Their music is borne of a mixture of influences ranging from electro-punk, new wave and gothic, culminating in a truly unique and atmospheric sound – utilising so many different sounds in their music, electronic and synthesised components; with droney, grungey vocal stylings over the top to truly pull it all together superbly. They performed for us at our On The Irwell festival, and their energetic live performance was a delight to see – this new single sounds absolutely boss too, well worth a listen!

A familiar face for us on the Manchester scene, Bronam has just dropped his second single “My Girlfriend Loves Adam Sandler More Than Me“! After a roaring success on his first single at the start of the year, he’s returned with another pop-punk-esque indie track, you can really hear all of his influences in this tune, ranging from metal, grunge to indie and even beyond. With hard-hitting lyrical capability, belting the lyrics at the top of his voice, a singalong catchy hook – he’s proving himself to truly be one to watch here in Manchester.

Sheffield indie-pop outfit Work in TV return with their new EP “Better Hours“! We’ve been a fan of these guys for a while now, really bringing 2000’s indie vibes to the stage, but with a more modern alternative feel – vocal harmonies throughout each track, and lead singer Jack truly controlling the space with his powerful vocal ability. Each of these tunes sound fantastic, their capability to be able to not only write a catchy hook, but to be able to use interesting and intelligent lyricism throughout all of their songs, really sets them apart from the rest. An incredible listen!

One of our favourite acts on the Manchester scene, Old Sun, New Moon have just released their new single “Hearts Change“! The inimitable duo of Tom & Ethan return, their chemistry is unmatched as ever. Tom’s lyricism is on point (as always!) here, with imaginative and emotive storytelling, delivered in such a strong and invocative manner – and matched with Ethan’s innate ability to craft a gorgeous soundscape, perfectly laying a backdrop to the song.. it sounds absolutely fantastic. The addition of the strings on top is the icing on the cake!

Manchester’s own indie-pop stars Foxglove just released their brand new single “Clouds”! we were massive fans of their previous track “Tell Me A Story” and this only exceeds our expectations from them. a grooving, electric song that feels bouncy all the way through, with a lovely tight rhythm section, jazzy and atmospheric guitarwork and all of this comes together superbly for the main vocal to soar over it, gaining the listener’s attention with intimate and raw lyricism, gorgeous melody lines, and catchy singalong hooks – another brilliant tune under their belts!

we’ve known of FEAR OF MARKO for a long long time now and we’ve always been astounded by his individualism, his unique energy that he brings to not only every track but everywhere he goes, and his ability to bend any genre to his will – his new single here “Teeth” is hard evidence of his utter talent! blending elements of hyperpop, hiphop and metal/grunge, he’s able to create an upbeat yet dynamic track, with oozes with authenticity – his ability to write a hook is second to none. the production on this is so astute, perfectly complimenting the track (as we’ve come to see in all of his tunes!) and it’s another incredible track under his belt.

we’ve been fans of Lavender Rodriguez for ages now, having loved their previous couple of singles, utilising so many influences to create something extremely unique – and their new single “Sunrise” sounds absolutely gorgeous. you can hear elements of so many genres in it, from soul, to trip-hop, to alt-pop, to rnb – it’s a gorgeous track that stands out so well in a modern world of boxing in music. Lavender’s vocal ability is on full show here, utilising luscious melodies throughout, and the production is incredible, so many individual elements coming together and feeling so fresh throughout, to create a really personal and emotive track that any listener can connect with.

we had the amazing Paul Shepherd perform for us a bunch over the past month or so, and it was an absolute pleasure to hear his tunes, an accomplished songwriter who has a natural ability to hook an audience in with effortless lyrics, lovely melodies and singalong hooks – and this new single “Time & Time Again” is truly evident of his talent. it sounds mega, and the full band sound on the record really brings out the indie-rock elements of the tune, a real upbeat and dance-y feel to it; the vocal harmonies in the chorus helping it feel bigger and bigger, and the guitar solo putting the finishing touch on a lovely anthemic tune.

yet another incredible month of music, there’s been so many fantastic releases, and there’s a whole plethora of talent out there, that we didn’t get to cover! thanks to everyone who has checked this out! 🤘

Just The Crust 13/05/24: William Cawley – Regine/Or? 👊

our feature for today’s Just The Crust is the brand new single from William Cawley, “Regine/Or?” ☀️

we covered his previous release towards the end of last year, and his upbeat indie-rock styling is great, reminiscent of surf rock and 60’s sounds; chock full of jangly guitars, vocal harmonies and singalong vibes. 👊

this new single is more of a downbeat, moody and atmospheric vibe – especially with the guitar tone, a more post-punk 80’s feel, yet still with the energetic drumbeat that we became accustomed to in his previous work. it’s a more direct track lyrically, a more ambient feel yet still full on and loud 🙌 the breakdown at the end is like a lovely contrast to the rest of the track, and it jumps straight back into a final run of the chorus expertly.

you can find the track on all streaming sites, including Spotify at https://open.spotify.com/artist/1KGAiXeLAgZmrIzpxBDqga – well worth a listen! 🎧

Just The Crust 06/05/24: VALA – Fishing God 👊

we’ve covered VALA a bunch over the past year or so and we’re always blown away by the quality of their tunes, so many belters and they’ve got a super unique sound; and when we caught them live at The Deaf Institute they were incredible, a brilliant night. 😊

this new EP only continues this trend, with a couple of tracks that we’re already huge fans of, and a few new ones thrown in there too! their lo-fi indie pop sound is on full force here, with lush guitar tones throughout and feelgood upbeat vibes – set to a lovely laidback atmosphere. the opener “Change Your Mind” is one of the new ones, and it sounds incredible, a real show of their unique style. amazing! well worth checking out, a bunch of great tunes! 🎶
