Just The Crust 05/02/24: Mort Jardin – Fragile (EP) 💥

our feature for today’s Just The Crust is the brand new EP from Mort JardinFragile“! 🎶

we’ve covered their music a bunch in the past, having released a bunch of incredible albums and EPs over the course of the past few years, laced with grungy goodness and melodic guitar riffs throughout – lovely stuff! 👊

this new EP only continues that trend, coming in at just over 12 minutes in total it’s full of bangers. there’s a more intimate and indie-rock feel throughout, especially on the first track, and with a more electronic and synthy feel throughout, it’s a less heavy release compared to their earlier work, but it’s still got the familiar melodic guitarwork and driving groove that we’ve come to see from Mort Jardin. 👊

you can find the EP in its entirety on all streaming platforms, including Spotify at https://open.spotify.com/album/0swOpcXNQnZwxVrMybXln9 – well worth checking out! 🙌

Just The Crust 29/01/24: VALA – On The Getaway 🎶

our feature for today’s Just The Crust is the brand new single from VALAOn The Getaway“! 🥪

we caught them at The Deaf Institute at the end of last year and were blown away by their stage presence, the quality of their songs and their supreme musicianship – fantastic stuff. we’ve covered their previous releases a bunch and we’re always looking forward to hearing new tunes from them! 🙌

this new single sounds fantastic, taking a more lo-fi and pop sound to their music, whilst still maintaining their more indie/alternative origins – it’s a real laidback tune, with a lovely jazzy style guitar melody, waves of lead guitar enveloping the track and with a lovely mellow and conversationalist main vocal. it builds and builds throughout the tune superbly and culminates abruptly at the end – yet still making you want to go back and listen again! ☀️

Just The Crust 22/01/24: Big Hug – Cruellemonde De La Hi Fi 🥪

our feature for today’s Just The Crust is the brand new single from Big Hug, “Cruellemonde De La Hi Fi“! 🙌

this new single is the first from their upcoming EP, and it sounds mega – they released their debut EP “Don’t Threaten Me With A Good Time” last year to critical acclaim, and having performed across London and surrounding areas, they’re back with their brand new release! ☀️

the new track sounds mega, with an indulgence of 90’s alternative influence, punk and emo vibes and math rock inspirations. it’s in-your-face, loud and punchy, with a lovely rhythmic element behind it, a jolty and powerful groove – and gorgeous guitar melodies and tones lacing the atmosphere of the track, giving a luscious space for the main vocal to shine through, and with lyricism relative to today – about the struggle of 9-5 jobs, the routine and disillusionment of modern society. well worth a listen! 🎧

you can find the track in full on all streaming platforms, and it’s available to purchase on Bandcamp at https://bighugband.bandcamp.com/ – along with all their previous releases! well worth checking out their discography.

REVIEW: The Empire Police – The Human Condition 👊

Lancashire heavyweights The Empire Police bring their prolific year to an end with a bang, with the release of their brand new single “The Human Condition“. After performing across the North West, at venues such as Night and Day, The Ferret, and putting on their own festival Rock AM River in Preston at The New Continental, they’ve established themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the North West, and ones to definitely keep an eye out for in 2024.

📸: Liam Maxwell

We were massive fans of their previous release “Northern Bones” earlier this year, a track that blended grungier and punkier elements with intricate storytelling and poetry from lead singer Jordao – whilst maintaining catchy hooks, infectious melodies and huge soundscaping; just some of the class qualities that we’ve come to expect from The Empire Police’s offerings. Their songs are laden with accurate, yet often bleak descriptions of society and the modern climate, written with passion and expertise – and their musical capabilities behind the lyrics give the songs a huge impact on the listener. Every element of the track works in perfect unison with one another to ensure that the music has just as much power and impact as the lyricism does.

This new tune “The Human Condition” not only is another classic from The Empire Police, but sets a real standard, it’s an incredible track from the fellas. Opening up with a wavy, dream-like soundscape, the track gives a strong backdrop for Jordao to command the listener’s attention – and his lyricism throughout is quality, taking a real look at the nature of humanity, a real reflection of the society of today. His rhyming pattern throughout is lovely, always maintaining freshness – and the tight rhythm section behind creates a real foundation on the track. There’s a gorgeous guitar tone within the verses, picking lovely riffs and then opening up to a huge wall of sound in the choruses, giving such a ferocity to it. The breakdown is a short breath of fresh air, and calm, within the track – and the build up to the final section is huge, with a real sense of power and command throughout it all.
