our feature for today’s Just The Crust is the brand new single “Shoot Me Now” from Brighton-based Dirt Royal!
their sound of high-octane rock n roll/indie is class, they have a real brilliant energy to their music – fantastic to see! they’ve already got a great following due to their previous releases and they’re well worth checking out.
this new tune continues with that energy, with a singalong chorus that we can only imagine would be belted back at them from crowds when they’re playing live, plus tongue-in-cheek lyricism pertaining to the current climate and even a lovely lil guitar solo in the middle – it’s a really well-done track with such simplicity to it but still sounding boss. definitely ones to watch!
this is tonight! over at the Grafton Arms – gonna be a fantastic one!
we’ve got the amazing JCK headlining for us, seriously one of the most talented chaps we’ve met, such great energy to his sets and just a real lovely lad with some insane tunes. amazing support from janelaceymusicCal Walsh and Johnny Braddock! proper can’t wait for this one.

we’re back with our next Knead To Know interview today, with the amazing Scott Magnus! 🤘
it’s fantastic to be able to speak with Scott here, he’s a super talented artist based here in Manchester and over the past year or two he’s been releasing banger after banger, getting some amazing recognition for his work and doing super well. we love his unique blend of genres, mixing together rapping, indie rock and even elements of metal in his music to create something truly his own style! 👊
he’s just released his debut EP “COMEBACK STRONGER” which sounds absolutely brilliant, a fantastic collection of songs that really give you a true insight into his life and experiences – we really loved the singles prior to the release of the album and this only exceeds our expectations! find our full interview with him below! 👇
Hey Scott, we’re delighted to be able to have a chat with you about your music here. You’ve released a few singles in the past – tell us a little bit about them and what they mean to you!
A lot of my singles have been about personal development whether that be embracing being an introvert but recognising the need to stay connected on ‘Lone Wolf’ or trying to learn and come back stronger back from failure and a fall from grace with ‘The Phoenix’. These two singles were written quite a while ago and were singer-songwriter pop with elements of trap and electro.
My latest single ‘Don’t Take Away My Purpose’ was the least introspective, it was assertive and fierce as it explored challenging a naysayer trying to make me stop doing what I love and be someone i’m not. This was my most eclectic song yet it built and built starting with indie/ neo soul/ chill rap then going into electro pop, hiphop then into grunge/ pop rock.
Your new EP is out now! How was it releasing a full-length EP?
It was really satisfying to tell a story through music in a way that my previously singles haven’t allowed me to. The story is one that is very personal to me and tackles the challenges I face as someone with learning difficulties. This is a topic which is rarely looked at and a voice that we rarely hear from so it was great to have the chance to express this point of view so candidly and authentically. I wanted people to see how challenging life with learning difficulties can be and despite that you can prevail if you focus on what you can do, learn from your mistakes and work hard. I hope this can inspire and comfort those struggling with the challenges I face or any of the challenges they face in their lives.
The response from people who listen to the whole EP was great. Many reported feeling inspired and uplifted which is exactly what I had hoped.
Where did you record the album? What was involved in the creation of it?
I recorded the album/ EP at Tngey’s studios in Blackpool. The process of creating it involved me composing a demo at home. Sometimes I would write the song solo on guitar first and sometimes I would write the song initially on a logic project. I’d make use of the instrument packs like Omnisphere and also the sample database Splice. I’d then take the demo to the studio, record guitars, vocals and then my good freind Tngey would take things to another level with his mind blowing production!
What inspires you to write songs? Have you got a creative process when you’re writing / creating?
I’m often inspired to write song when something poignant, dramatic and interesting happens to me and I have something I really want to say! My process will frequently involve me coming up with an instrumental or beat on logic then improvising to it, I will keep the best melodies and then make sense/ refine my lyrics in a notepad.
Who produces your music? (If yourself, just talk about the production elements and inspirations)
Tngey produced my Ep. He is incredibly skilled, talented but also really receptive and adaptable to the directions I would like to take things sonically. The imprint of where I want to take things will be in the demo I make at home but he can bring something really fresh to the table!
Tell us a bit about your musical journey – where did you start and what has made you evolve to where you are now?
I started playing guitar at 11 and I started writing songs at 15. I had a hiatus for a few years while pursuing acting blinkeredly but I decided to pursue music more seriously two years ago. To get back into it I started by learning covers and making songs on logic. I was on Contact theatres online music course which really challenged me to push my music skills in different directions such as writing a score to a short film. I have been working on my guitar, singing and production skills trying to learn more challenging covers each time. I have been searching for better and more interesting musical influences and trying to bring them together in a powerful and unique way – I’m trying to innovate!
How did the lockdowns impact you as a musician? What did you do throughout them? Did it get in the way of any projects?
The lockdowns were a positive impact on me as a musician. I was a key worker for a lot of it but for the first few months I was able to have more time to work on my music than before. I wrote songs did covers and also started making sketch comedy which has become a key part of the content that I make.
When you’re performing live, do you have any rituals to get into the mindset of it all? What do you enjoy most about it all?
I like to do yoga and exercise the day of a performance if I can. This keeps me alert and energised. I love the freedom on stage to express myself and to entertain the audience!
We’ve seen a great deal of interest in your singles – what kinds of responses have you had from fans or press?
The response has been really positive. People seem to respond really well to the fact I merge many genres and my songs have positive motivational messages! I have been lucky enough to receive press from publications such as Earmilk and Rolling Stone India.
Have you got anything coming up in 2022 we should know about?
My biggest single ‘Smirked’ will be coming out later this year and with a badass music video for it. It is a real culmination of the sound I have been trying to hone, a sound which combines, rock, melodic rap and trap and pop!
it’s been super lovely to chat with Scott here and see his perspective and journey – it’s so inspiring to hear about everyone’s different challenges and how they overcame hurdles to get to where they want to be. ☀️ brilliant to see, and he’s very deserving of the success he’s got, the EP sounds brilliant and well worth checking out!

we’ve known Scatterchild for a good while now, having featured a bunch of their amazing releases on the website, caught them at plenty of gigs here in Manchester and even put them on a few lineups ourselves – they always put on a top show, with such energy, intimacy and power to their sets
this new tune only continues in a long line of brilliant releases from the indie-folk outfit, with beautiful melody lines throughout, and the track builds and builds throughout each verse to reach a huge chorus chock-full of vocal harmonies and such powerful lyricism from Jay – really proving his vocal ability in this track!
we love the bridge in this, dropping to create a real intimate connection with the listener, only to open back up to a huge chorus and ending off the track with a beautiful outro that just simply puts the song at ease. a really well-crafted track from the lads!

this new single is a rework of one of his previous releases – that came out just as the lockdowns were implemented so he’s fancied redoing it and it sounds fantastic! you can really hear the Frank Turner inspiration in this but he’s kept it to his own sound really well a massive tune about growing up and keeping to your roots – so well written!
the chorus in this is huge – we can really hear this one being belted out from the crowd at his gigs, his songwriting here is on point and you can really feel the intimacy of his lyrics in it – sounds absolutely brilliant, big things on the way for this young chap!
here’s our March edition of The Wrap for you all! ✨ what a brilliant month of class releases up North here, so fantastic to see it all going on. we love writing up these and you can find all of our lil reviews below! 🤘
Manchester-based indie outfit The Perps have returned with their brand new single “Wake Up On Saturday“! Starting out with a lovely flowing melody that really sets the scene for the track, and a rhythm section that adds so much power behind it all, it sounds super lovely. The vocals on this are fantastic, really commanding the attention throughout and such a catchy chorus – a real feel good tune to bring us into these summer months! A great unique sound to these guys, well worth a listen for anyone who’s into their indie and rock music. We love that guitar solo too, flowing seamlessly and so melodic! 🙌 (SPOTIFY / APPLE MUSIC / YOUTUBE)
A familiar face on the Manchester scene now, Green Wire have brought out yet another banger “Cigarettes On The Dancefloor“! A real lovely atmosphere to the track, with a huge intro that drops into the verse where the vocal sounds class, really huge energy and dynamic to it – we’d absolutely love to see this live at a gig! The little guitar licks in the background are super lush too, really creating a solid foundation to the track. There’s a few little nods to Manchester within the lyrics too, super cheeky but we love it. The guitar solo in this sounds massive too, so much power to it and it really takes control over the track. Another fantastic release from these guys, keep an eye on them for sure! 👊 (SPOTIFY / APPLE MUSIC / YOUTUBE)
Leeds-based Lost Hive have brought out their debut single “Confessions“! With a beautiful groove to the track, it starts out on such a strong front, with all the elements working perfectly in sync together. The main vocal here is relaxed and delivers the story so well, whilst still keeping the listener engaged – and the backing vocals only add to this, with lovely contrasts between the both to balance them out nicely. The breakdown is perfect, dropping away to a real soft feeling only to drop back into that final chorus that explodes! The music video is high-octane too, well worth a watch. Can’t wait to see what these guys have in store! ☀️ (SPOTIFY / APPLE MUSIC / YOUTUBE)
Liverpool-based RATS have been on our radar for a while now, with so many fantastic releases under their belt already and they’ve returned with a massive banger here. “Jenny” is delivered so well, and they’ve got such a knack for storytelling and in such a unique style, really setting them apart! We love that their Scouse accents are a huge part of the track, really solidifying their sound – and that breakdown with the harmonising backing vocals is simply beautiful! Well, well, well worth listening to, these guys have been making huge waves lately and this only shows that they’re destined to go far. 😎 (SPOTIFY / APPLE MUSIC / YOUTUBE)
Manchester’s own indie-pop pioneers Foxglove have returned with yet another brilliant single “Lights Off“! Instantaneously dropping into a beautiful soundscape of euphoric-like vibes, this sounds fantastic right from the get-go. The use of space, delay and reverb in this is spot on – really making the use of everything in their arsenal to create such a lovely styling of dream-pop influenced indie rock. Lead singer Abi’s vocal sounds absolutely gorgeous here, the use of backing vocals to compliment her lead in the chorus is class, fantastic stuff! Well worth watching the video too, such a great concept and delivers the story so well in tandem with the lyricism. Keep your eyes peeled for these guys! 🌛 (SPOTIFY / APPLE MUSIC / YOUTUBE)
PAVÉ have been on the scene for a while now, and we’ve been huge fans of their singles to date – this EP “Distraction” really brings them all together in a beautiful and such well-crafted manner! With huge guitar riffs, massive rhythm sections to compliment Alanya-Jade’s tremendous vocal throughout, it’s well worth a listen if you’re after huge, powerful tunes. 🤘 There’s even a new song on the EP too, “Cherry Blossom” which we love, super melodic and intricately put together to really relay the lyrics – it’s a gorgeous track and a brilliant addition to the rest of the tracks. Definitely worth checking this EP out! (SPOTIFY / APPLE MUSIC / YOUTUBE)
We’ve been in awe of Gen and the Degenerates ever since we heard their first single – with such raw power, huge soundscapes and an incredible vocal from Gen, they’ve made absolute scenes with their music. This EP “Only Alive When In Motion” is insane. They’ve pulled out all the stops for this, every song is a banger and only improving on their already brilliant sound, we’re blown away by it! We knew these guys were going places already, but this release has to definitely set them as ones to watch on the entire UK scene. Each song is unique but maintains that familiar sound we’ve come to see from the band, with fantastic choruses, beautiful guitar licks, huge rhythm to it all.. it’s expertly written, produced and just shows off simply how talented these guys all are. A definite listen. (SPOTIFY / APPLE MUSIC / BANDCAMP / YOUTUBE)

his album here “High Peaks” is a beautiful collection of his music, it’s a really lovely experience listening through to it all, with a really peaceful and serene ambience to it – beautiful guitar melodies that seem to just float throughout the bars, and you can really see the time and effort he’s put into each of the tracks, a very well-crafted collection of tunes here.
